Book excerpt: In Part I, 'Coronation Street at War', it is September 1939 and 16 year-old Elsie Tanner walks into Coronation Street. Newly married, pregnant and full of hopes and dreams, she has little idea of the difficult times ahead. But within days her husband has enlisted, leaving his teenage bride to face the neighbours alone: snotty Annie Walker; shy Esther Hayes; cocky Jim Todd and Ena Sharples. With their menfolk overseas, the women of Coronation Street are forced to make do, supporting each other through the tragedies of the War. In Part II 'The Way to Victory' the German bombing continues, the Yanks have been posted overseas and, for Elsie Tanner, the world seems to be a colourless place of dreary munitions work and the restrictions of rationing...But all this is about to change as the end of the war draws nearer. Coronation Street: The War Years Saga tells the story of the enduring resilience of the plucky residents of Weatherfield, as they struggle through hardship, absent sweethearts and loss, to emerge as the more mature characters that formed the backbone of the longest-running serial drama. on TV.

Book excerpt: From the time when Rovers Return landlady Annie Walker first cast a disapproving glance at Ena Sharples gossiping with Minnie Caldwell to the traumas caused by the tangled love lives of the Websters or the McDonalds, viewers have been gripped by the lives of those who live in one street in the northern town of Weatherfield. Just like any other street in the country, the locals living there have changed dramatically over the years since the rest of Britain first paid the area a visit in 1960. There have been many marriages, births, and deaths, with characters such as Elsie Tanner, Hilda Ogden, Alf Roberts, or Mike Baldwin fading into the past as new faces move into the street. The one man who has remained ever since we first saw him there all those years ago is, of course, Ken Barlow. Despite the changing nature of its residents and the many disasters and tragedies that have befallen them, one thing in the street always remains the same. Defying all the dark intrigue and neighborhood squabbles, the people who live there maintain a close-knit community, supporting each other through the tough times and celebrating the good times. This is the complete story of Coronation Street.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first major study of the roles of women in prime time soap operas. In a comparative analysis of British and North American television soaps, Christine Geraghty examines the relationship between the narratives on the screen and the women viewers who make up the traditional soap audience. Within the structure of many of the most popular soaps, such as Dallas, Dynasty, Coronation Street and EastEnders, the split between public and personal life, reason and emotion, work and leisure is turned into a lynchpin of the plot. The author argues that these themes are also linked to broader social divisions between men and women, divisions which soap operas both question and develop as a source of pleasure. Geraghty analyses the critical role of women characters in the families and communities of soaps and suggests that the utopian possibilities of soaps can be used not just to maintain the status quo, but to promote change and influence attitudes and prejudices. She examines the way in which soaps have been transformed in the last decade, looking at how issues of class, race, sexual orientation and feminism have been handled in the programmes. She argues that in pursuing new audiences more recent soaps such as Brookside may have put at risk the pleasures they have traditionally offered their women viewers. Women and Soap Opera is a detailed, thoughtful and wide-ranging analysis which will become a central work in women’s studies and media and cultural studies courses.
