Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Go Up Kettle Creek is a historical portrayal of a river and the people who made their living along its banks and tributaries. Drawing upon the personal recollections and oral traditions of longtime residents, William Lynwood Montell describes a century and a half of life in the Upper Cumberland. Montell organized his material according to the topics that dominated his tape-recorded conversations with residents of the area-farming, logging and rafting, steamboating, the Civil War-topics that the people themselves saw as important in their history. In reconstructing the past, the author also illuminates the relationship between geographic and economic factors in the region; the prolonged affects of a cataclysmic event, the Civil War, on the isolated area; and the impact of modernization, in the form of "hard" roads and cheap, TVA-supplied electricity, on the traditional ways of people. First published in 1983, this book is now available in paperback for the first time. Included with this edition is a new foreword in which Montell and Mary Robbins, executive director of the Tennessee Upper Cumberland Tourism Association, describe changes in the area that have occured since the book's initial appearance. The Author: William Lynwood Montell, now retired, was coordinator of programs in folk and interculturual studies at Western Kentucky University. His numerous books include Ghosts along the Cumberland and The Saga of Coe Ridge.

Book excerpt: After enduring a week of punishing try-outs and making the cut for the girls' varsity field hockey team, new players must participate in a night of questionable bonding traditions and loyalty tests, orchestrated by the most senior girls on the squad and performed with the implicit permission of their seemingly all-American young male coach. Tomorrow, the Wildcat varsity field hockey squad will play the first game of their new season. But at tonight's team sleepover, everything hinges on the midnight initiation ceremony. It is the only facet of being a Wildcat that the girls control. Until Coach - a handsome former college player revered and feared in equal measure - changes the plan. They take a rival team's mascot for a joyride, crash a party in their pajamas, break into the high school for the perfect picture. Just how far are the girls willing to go for their team?--description adapted from jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named for Revolutionary general Nathanael Greene, Kentucky's Green River begins a 384-mile journey at its source near Kings Mountain in Lincoln County, flowing through the Pennyroyal and Western Coal Field regions until its confluence with the Ohio River in Henderson County. Throughout the 1800s, the Green River was a lifeline for valley residents, both in obtaining supplies or transporting products to cities along the Ohio River and destinations as far as New Orleans. Flatboats moved lime, coal, tobacco, and whiskey out of the valley, while rafts of logs were floated to Evansville sawmills. In the 1830s, a series of locks and dams were built on the Green River, permanently raising water levels that finally allowed larger paddle wheel steamers to begin plying upstream, transporting passengers and freight into the river's upper reaches. Referred to as the "era of steamboating," these magnificent boats were numerous until the last of the fleet, the Evansville, burned in 1931. Today, commercial towboats continue moving numerous products along the lower segment of the river, while the upper portion of the river is known as the fourth-most diverse aquatic ecosystem in the United States, making it a destination for outdoor enthusiasts from across the country.

Book excerpt: Butler County, located in the south-central part of the state, was the commonwealth's 53rd county. Settlers moving into the area thought they had found "a little bit of heaven"--a virgin forest of oak, poplar, chestnut, hickory, and walnut and an abundance of wild game. Out of this wilderness developed a county rich in tradition, with many contributions to state and national history. It has been said that, for its population, the county has produced more notable people than any other in the nation. This list including two governors, an attorney general of Kentucky, a chief justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court, a US senator, three US representatives, a Congressional Medal of Honor recipient, two US Navy admirals, a Methodist bishop, and countless other equally productive citizens who proudly call Butler County home.
