Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The War Diaries for the Great War, held under WO95, represent one of the most popular record collections held at the National Archives, Kew, London. For researchers and family historians, the War Diaries contain a wealth of information of far greater interest than the army could ever have predicted. They provide unrivalled insight into daily events on the front line and are packed with fascinating detail. They contain no modern editing, opinions or poorly judged comments, just the war day by day, written by the men who fought this 'War to end all Wars. They are without question, the most important source of information available on the war on the Western Front. Full colour facsimile of each page with specially created chronological index. What is a War Diary? The headquarters of each unit and formation of the British Army in the field was ordered to maintain a record of its location, movements and activities. For the most part, these details were recorded on a standard army form headed 'War diary or intelligence summary'. What details are given? Details given vary greatly, depending on the nature of the unit, what it was doing and, to some extent, the style of the man writing it. The entries vary from very simple and repetitive statements like 'Training' up to many pages of description when a unit was in battle. Production of the diary was the responsibility of the Adjutant of the headquarters concerned. Is there any other information or documents with the diaries? Some diaries have other documentation attached, such as maps, operational orders and after-action reports.

Book excerpt: WOLVERHAMPTON WARRIORS The Town's Battalions in the Great War The original history if the 1/6th and 2/6th Battalions of the South Staffordshire Regiment was published in 1924. Copies of that book are now scarce and correspondingly expensive. This history has been produced to bring to a wider audience an idea of how the men lived in the trenches, their trials and tribulations, their victories and their defeats. The 1/6th Battalion was the first complete pre-war Territorial unit to serve in France and a second Battalion (the 2/6th) was raised to act initially as a feeder battalion to supply further drafts of men to the 1/6th. After seeing service in Ireland at the start of the Irish Easter Rising in 1916 the 2/6th Battalion was sent to France in its own right in February 1917. Although originally based in Wolverhampton the 1/6th and 2/6th Battalions also contained men from the surrounding towns and villages and eventually from much further afield.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty-four years after the publication of his classic study of the Somme, Peter Liddle reconsiders the battle in the light of recent scholarship. The battle still gives rise to fierce debate and, with Passchendaele, it is often seen as the epitome of the tragic folly of the First World War. But is this a reasoned judgement? Peter Liddle, in this authoritative study, re-examines the concept and planning of the operation and follows the course of the action through the entire four and a half months of the fighting. His narrative is based on the graphic testimony of the men engaged in the struggle, not just concentrating on the front-line infantryman but also the gunner, sapper, medical man, airman and yes, the nurse, playing her crucial role behind the line of battle. The reader is privileged in getting a direct insight into how those who were there coped with the extraordinary, often prolonged, stress of the experience and maintained to a remarkable degree a level of morale adequate for what had to be endured.
