Book excerpt: Learning Christ represents a thorough reevaluation of Ignatius as author and theologian, demonstrating that his seven authentic letters present a sophisticated and cohesive vision of the economy of redemption. Gregory Vall argues that Ignatius s thought represents a vital synthesis of Pauline, Johannine, and Matthean perspectives while anticipating important elements of later patristic theology. Topics treated in this volume include Ignatius s soteriological anthropology, his Christology and nascent Trinitarianism, his nuanced understanding of the relationship between Judaism and Christianity, and his ecclesiology and eschatology.

Book excerpt: There is an emerging realization within the Body of Christ that God is calling His bride to be holy and is preparing His Body so that every member is equipped, filled, anointed, and functioning in their calling. He is going to fill His temple with His fire and glory in these last days to purify, sanctify and cleanse it so that we might manifest His glory upon the earth. The world wide Body of Christ, or the Universal Church is called to manifest the kingdom of God in the earth as one Body, with one hope, and with one calling, but every member of that body is unique and every local church is unique. Although every local church is called to conform to the same heavenly pattern, we recognize just as believers have specific giftings and ministries, every local church will have a unique prophetic mandate and calling to their community and to the wider Body of Christ. This calling and its expression will reflect the vision and personality of those within the church. One such church in the New Testament that was distinct in its ministry is the Church in Antioch which functioned as a hub or centre that was apostolic in nature and became a model that the Ephesian and Thessalonian Church's then adapted.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume Father Meier explores how Matthew remodeled the form, the Christological message, and the moral demand of the gospel. Part I shows Matthew's church in crisis. It was experiencing a shift in its Christian existence: from a narrow Jewish-Christian past to a universal Gentile future. To preserve yet reinterpret the particularistic traditions of that Jewish-Christian past, Matthew drew up a model of salvation history and then reshaped the gospel message to fit it. Part II offers a mini-commentary on the whole gospel to illustrate this reshaping of the message. Pericope by pericope, Matthew presents Jesus as Son of God and Son of Man, and therefore as 'the' definitive teacher of his Church. Indeed, the nexus between Christ and his Church emerges as the outstanding characteristic of Matthew's gospel. Part III studies Matthew's construction of a unified moral vision on the basis of this connection between Christ and Church. The basic stance of Jesus and his disciples towards the Mosaic Law is one of fulfillment - a 'prophetic' fulfillment which involves at times a deepening of, at times the abrogation of, the letter of the Law.
