Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the establishment of optometry as the primary eye care profession, and significant reforms under way in health care, the opportunity exists now to add value to an independent eye care practice for both the doctor and the patient. The favorable geographic distribution of optometrists in rural and urban locations lends well to the evolving trends of health care in America. Ease of access to care without having to travel long distances lends well to the economics for patients. The difficulty for the independent practice is the paradigm shift required on several levels: from paper records to electronic; from an optical focus to medical, from individual and episodic care to team-based and coordinated care. Add to this the concomitant increase in the complexity of billing and coding and we have a whole new game on our hands, a survival game. The exact strategy to make this shift adeptly does not exist. Vision without execution is hallucination. This guide will serve as a basis for applying some organizational sense to the adventure of creating a new medical model for forward-thinking optometric practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As academic health sciences centers look toward innovative product development as their new income source with the decline of clinical income and research dollars, health sciences librarians and libraries can partner with these revenue-generating innovators to offer invaluable services, evidence, training, dissemination venues and attractive collaborative physical spaces equipped with the latest tools, such as 3-D printers, body scanners, models and video-monitors. This book uses case examples, including perspectives from both librarians and innovators, to illustrate how various health sciences libraries have partnered with innovators by offering valuable services and creative products and spaces– especially innovators who create medical digital therapeutics devices and apps. Many health sciences libraries are transforming their physical spaces into collaboration or maker spaces to spark innovation and discoveries. Key health sciences libraries that have done so to enable others to learn more about what professional benefits result from such collisions of information and innovation are highlighted here. Also included in the book are chapters that describe various innovation competitions and products that help to showcase the unique scholarly output that is generated by innovators. Transferring the knowledge of librarians who have progressed down this path to others is the key goal of this book.

Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.

This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Silver Medal Winner, Business and Leadership, 2012 Nautilus Book Awards Respected former CEO, professor, and speaker examines what it takes to become a values-based leader In this highly-anticipated book, Harry Kraemer argues that today's business environment demands values-based leaders who, in "doing the right thing," deliver outstanding and lasting results. The journey to becoming a values-based leader starts with self-reflection. He asks, "If you are not self-reflective, how can you know yourself? If you do not know yourself, how can you lead yourself? If you cannot lead yourself, how can you lead others?" Kraemer identifies self-reflection as the first of four principles that guide leaders to make choices that honor their values and candidly recounts how these principles helped him navigate some of the toughest challenges he faced in his career. Offers a framework for adopting the principles of values-based leadership—self-reflection, balance, true self-confidence, and genuine humility—to lead organizations effectively Based on Kraemer's popular Kellogg MBA course on values-based leadership A recognized expert in values-based leadership, Kraemer is a sought after speaker on the subject Lively and engaging, Kraemer's book comes at a critical time when true leadership in every facet of society is desperately needed. All of Harry’s proceeds from the book sales are donated to the One Acre Fund in Africa.
