Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Three Gardens It occurred to me last week, that perhaps we might profitably dwell on the Three Gardens, which are mentioned in the Scriptures, and which are so intimately connected with the destiny of the race; and, in accordance with this general purpose, I have selected the Garden of Eden for some remarks, this morning. I do not suppose that there is any one whose privilege it has been to be brought up in the country, or in a city, not so much crowded as to crowd out the garden, by whom the garden is not esteemed as one of the choicest recollections which childhood carries with it, all through life - to its latest day. There is a difference between a garden and a field. A field is a place to work, and you never associate anything else with it; but while the garden is a place for work, it is also a place for play. It has not only its fruit trees, but it has also its flowers. It has that which makes it pleasant to the eye, it is a place of shade, it is a place of fragrance, it is a pleasure ground, and it always presupposes that there are human beings about, not only to take care of it, but also to enjoy it. You never associate gardens with animals or wild beasts, but the garden is the special adjunct of man, as lord of the manor. Book excerpt: “A Way to Garden prods us toward that ineffable place where we feel we belong; it’s a guide to living both in and out of the garden.” —The New York Times Book Review For Margaret Roach, gardening is more than a hobby, it’s a calling. Her unique approach, which she calls “horticultural how-to and woo-woo,” is a blend of vital information you need to memorize and intuitive steps you must simply feel and surrender to. In A Way to Garden, Roach imparts decades of garden wisdom on seasonal gardening, ornamental plants, vegetable gardening, design, gardening for wildlife, organic practices, and much more. She also challenges gardeners to think beyond their garden borders and to consider the ways gardening can enrich the world. Brimming with beautiful photographs of Roach’s own garden, A Way to Garden is practical, inspiring, and a must-have for every passionate gardener.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Children and Gardens Well do I remember the time when I thought there were two kinds of people in the world - children and grown-ups, - and that the world really belonged to the children. And I think it is because I have been more or less a gardener all my life thati still feel like a child in many ways, although from the number of years I have lived I ought to know that I am quite an Old woman. But I can still - when no one is looking climb over a five-barred'gate or jump a ditch; but then I was always strong and active in my limbs, and in many ways more like a boy than a girl. This was no doubt because my place in the family came in the middle of four boys; two brothers Older and two younger. I had no girl companions, for my only sister was seven years Older, so that we were not much together. It was therefore natural that I should be more Of a boy than a girl in my ideas and activities, delighting to go Up trees, and to play cricket, and take wasps' nests after dark, and do dreadful deeds with gunpowder and all the boy sort of things. But when my brothers went to school I had to find my own amusements. There was a dear old pony Toby and the dog Crim, and we three used to wander away into the woods and heaths and along all the little lanes and by-paths Of our beautiful country.
