Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperature of the Honeybee Cluster in Winter A special reason for this emphasis in a preliminary paper is that all previous work on the temperature of the cluster in winter, of which there has been considerable, has failed to show definitely What the normal responses are. The data are often those of abnormal con ditions and are therefore misleading, making them almost valueless for purposes of application, One source of error which is to be found in all the records known to the authors is the use of the mer cury thermometer, for, when such a thermometer is used, it is almost impossible to avoid disturbing the cluster at each reading so that it reacts abnormally. Furthermore, as the authors will attempt to show at a later time, disturbances of the colony may influence the temperature of the cluster for a considerable period, often more than one day. Usually no account has been taken of the necessary cor rections to be made for the mercury thermometer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Production of Honeybees in Winter In considering the circumstances on this last day-of the experi ment with bees it is interesting to recall observations made in the study Of the effect Of ventilation on men, that the sensations produced by bad 7air are not experienced when the air is stirred. If this indicates an actual cliflerence in physiological conditions in the di mer ent circumstances, then it is not inconceivable that something analo gous to this was true Of the bees on this day. The stirring Of the air when the circulation was resumed may have served to remove some cause Of depression that was e mective when the circulation was stopped.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overwintering of Honey Bee Colonies Strong colonies will usually consume considerably more honey over winter than weak colonies. However, such strong colonies will usually replace most of the honey used during the winter with new honey from willow, dandelion, fruit bloom, and other early blooming sources, under the same conditions that under-developed colonies continue to lose weight or show little or no gain. The strong colony that has a large population of young bees by mid-april not only shows a smaller net loss of reserve stores at the beginning of the surplus flow in june than a subnormal colony, but also is stronger and more capable of produc ing a large surplus crop. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bees in a Bar-Frame Hive Begin in a small way; don't believe in large profits. The bees so fertilize the blossom of fruit and field, that every kitchen garden and every farm should have its hives. Here is one main source of profit. Buy a veil, and use it on a hat with a wide rim. Coarse black net is cheap. Make a piece about 30 inches by 26 into a bottomless. Bag with a hem at the top; add elastic about 16 inches long to go round the hat. Tuck the lower part well in. Some rich folks like a black silk veil. Thick woollen gloves wetted protect the hands, but are a serious hindrance. A tightened string round the covered wrist and ankles will keep out creepers; gauntlets for the arms, going over the sleeves, with elastic at each end, can be made or bought. His description is, unfortunately, insufficient to determine the species which made its appearance on the dead bees, and which he did not name.
