Book excerpt: A superb facsimile of Dorothy Ianonne's 1970 comic-book tale of censorship, sexuality and female autonomy As much as Love and Eros have defined my work since its beginnings, so too has censorship, or its shadow, accompanied it," recalls Dorothy Iannone (born 1933) in her introduction to this facsimile publication of her legendary The Story of Bern, [or] Showing Colors. First published by Iannone and her then companion Dieter Roth in 1970, in an edition of 500, the book documents the censorship of Iannone's work The (Ta)Rot Pack (1968-69) and the subsequent removal of all his works by Roth, from a collective exhibition at the Kunsthalle Bern. For his exhibition titled Freunde, Friends, d'Fründe, legendary curator Harald Szeemann invited Karl Gerstner, Roth, Daniel Spoerri and André Thomkins to exhibit artist friends; Roth chose Iannone. The censorship of Iannone, and Roth's protest, eventually led to Harald Szeemann's resignation as the director of the institution. Telling the story of this act of censorship as well as the context of the exhibition in Bern and its iteration in a non-censored version in Düsseldorf, The Story of Bern is emblematic of Iannone's distinctive, explicit and comic-book style, and of her openness about sexuality and the strengthening of female autonomy.

Book excerpt: A survey of feminist art from suffrage posters to The Dinner Party and beyond: “Lavishly produced images . . . indispensable to scholars, critics and artists.” —Art Monthly Once again, women are on the march. And since its inception in the nineteenth century, the women’s movement has harnessed the power of images to transmit messages of social change and equality to the world. From highlighting the posters of the Suffrage Atelier, through the radical art of Judy Chicago and Carrie Mae Weems, to the cutting-edge work of Sethembile Msezane and Andrea Bowers, this comprehensive international survey traces the way feminists have shaped visual arts and media throughout history. Featuring more than 350 works of art, illustration, photography, performance, and graphic design—along with essays examining the legacy of the radical canon—this rich volume showcases the vibrancy of the feminist aesthetic over the past century and a half.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term “artistic animator” is inspired by the definition “Kunstanimator” given to Spoerri by his longstanding friend Karl Gerstner during an interview with Katerina Vatsella in 1995. Wherever he went, Spoerri was capable of inspiring others to make art, and at the same time he absorbed, interiorized and transformed ideas from others. His fluctuating memberships during late Modernism (Zero, Nouveau Réalisme, Fluxus, Mail Art) explain why some areas of this work have not yet received their due attention and their connection to the whole picture has often eluded scholarly inquiry. Beyond his tableaux-pièges, which gave him immediate notoriety through an early purchase by the MoMA, Spoerri discovered a new way to approach the multiples in sculpture (Edition MAT), he transformed his trap pictures into an experimental narrative form (Topographie Anécdotée du Hasard), he initiated the Eat Art movement, he tested an innovative curatorial approach (the Musée Sentimental and the Giardino). Despite constant interruptions due to his semi-nomadic lifestyle, this oeuvre presents an extraordinary coherence, where none of these ventures can be properly understood without considering all the others. This is the first monograph entirely devoted to Daniel Spoerri in the United States to date. With an introduction by Barbara Räderscheidt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a subtle but significant French heritage in North Carolina. Towns such as Bath, Beaufort, New Bern, and La Grange are testimony to the settlements of French Huguenots in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The city of Fayetteville is named after the Marquis de Lafayette, a French ally during the American Revolution. The first European explorers to the North Carolina region were, in fact, French (1524). French Huguenots migrated to the state as early as 1690 and many North Carolinians have last names of French origin. North Carolina has many other place names and remnants of French presence since the early colonial period. This book traces the historical presence of the French in NC from the state's origins to the present and tells the story of a little-known part of the state's cultural heritage. Based on an exhibition from the permanent collection of the Mississippi Museum of Art, this book explores artwork produced within the state by artists who were native to or lived in Mississippi or by travelers who created work about the state. Patti Carr Black presents the overall theme of place in four sections: the influence of the land on the art, Mississippi's people as depicted in its art, life in Mississippi as observed by its artists, and the exporting of Mississippi culture through its artists. Numerous artists' biographies are included as well as more than one hundred full-color illustrations.
