Both men were powerful players in American history from the mid to late 19th century. Both were supported and protected by their relationship with General Sherman's foster father, Thomas Ewing. As a United States Senator, John Sherman was also in a position to advise and protect his not-infrequently controversial brother. In turn, William exchanged his uncensored opinions on a wide range of public and private issues. For over fifty years, they carried on a fascinating and affectionate correspondence during some of the most turbulent and important years in America. From Cadet Sherman's days at West Point, through failed business ventures, to astonishing success in the American Civil War, and later during the Indian Wars, you'll read both brothers' views on many issues of the day. General Sherman's daughter found these letters after his death and edited them for publication. For the first time, this long out-of-print volume is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Book excerpt: William Tecumseh Sherman was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. He served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861-65), for which he received recognition for his outstanding command of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the "scorched earth" policies that he implemented in conducting total war against the Confederate States. Military historian Basil Liddell Hart famously declared that Sherman was "the first modern general". Sherman served under General Ulysses S. Grant in 1862 and 1863 during the campaigns that led to the fall of the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg on the Mississippi River and culminated with the routing of the Confederate armies in the state of Tennessee. In 1864, Sherman succeeded Grant as the Union commander in the western theater of the war. He proceeded to lead his troops to the capture of the city of Atlanta, a military success that contributed to the re-election of President Abraham Lincoln. Sherman's subsequent march through Georgia and the Carolinas further undermined the Confederacy's ability to continue fighting. He accepted the surrender of all the Confederate armies in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida in April 1865. When Grant became president, Sherman succeeded him as Commanding General of the Army (1869-83). As such, he was responsible for the conduct of the Indian Wars in the western United States. He steadfastly refused to be drawn into politics and in 1875 published his Memoirs, one of the best-known firsthand accounts of the Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major modern edition of the wartime correspondence of General William T. Sherman, this volume features more than 400 letters written between the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and the day Sherman bade farewell to his troops in 1865. Together, they trace Sherman's rise from obscurity to become one of the Union's most famous and effective warriors. Arranged chronologically and grouped into chapters that correspond to significant phases in Sherman's life, the letters--many of which have never before been published--reveal Sherman's thoughts on politics, military operations, slavery and emancipation, the South, and daily life in the Union army, as well as his reactions to such important figures as General Ulysses S. Grant and President Lincoln. Lively, frank, opinionated, discerning, and occasionally extremely wrong-headed, these letters mirror the colorful personality and complex mentality of the man who wrote them. They offer the reader an invaluable glimpse of the Civil War as Sherman saw it.

Book excerpt: Ten years after General William Tecumseh Sherman attained the height of his military achievement he published (in 1875) his Memoirs, an outspoken record of his career in peace and war. Ten years later he revised the Memoirs in the light of the abundant comment and criticism which they called forth. When nearly two more decades had passed, one of his children gave the public (in 1904) a liberal portion of the life-long correspondence between the General and his brother, the Hon. John Sherman. Both the Memoirs and the Sherman Letters brought to the readers of such books an animating knowledge of General Sherman as a writer-forcible, individual, fearless, the very counterpart in expression of everything which the history of his country records of him in action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (LARGE PRINT EDITION) 1894. With Portraits. Introduction: Soon after beginning the work of arranging my father's papers for publication, I found a series of letters which awoke my deepest interest. They covered a period extending from 1837 to 1891, and proved to be the complete correspondence between my father and his brother John during those more than fifty years. These letters, exchanged by two brothers of such eminence, and many of them written during the most stirring events of our country's history, seem to me unique. They form a collection, complete in itself; they are of great historical value, and the expressions of opinion which they obtain are so freely given as to furnish an excellent idea of the relations that existed between my father and his brother. Realizing all this, I have decided to publish the correspondence by itself; and in so doing, my chief desire has been to let the letters speak for themselves, and to put them such form that they may be easily understood.

In the early days of the conflict, he was considered by some to be insane. At the end of the war, he was considered one of America's greatest heroes and generals.Brilliant, erratic, and a force of nature, Sherman cut a swath across the South that is now a part of world history. In these intimate letters to family, you see a side of Sherman you perhaps have not seen before. From a young man writing to his future wife, to the general in charge of an army, to the man in his last years, these are the private letters Sherman sent home. This collection was passed on to Marc Antony DeWolfe Howe (of the Atlantic Monthly) by Sherman's daughter. Here are his opinions on politics and politicians, his fellow generals, his friend Grant, and the horrors of war.

THE WAR ENDED 1865 A Vivid element of the picturesque, all that contributes to song and story, has given to Sherman's march across Georgia a distinction somewhat out of proportion with the fame of his other campaigns. The Campaign of the Carolinas, which immediately followed the March to the Sea, holds a far less conspicuous place in popular knowledge and esteem. Yet the latest testimony of General Sherman's son confirms much that has been printed before: "My father always rated this campaign as his greatest military achievement, and believed that it settled the fate of the Confederacy." 1 "The March to the Sea," says Mr. James Ford Rhodes, "was a frolic, that northward a constant wrestling with the elements."2 Leaving Savannah with sixty thousand men on February 1,1865, Sherman reached Goldsboro, North Carolina, on March 23, having marched, in the face of a resourceful enemy, four hundred and twenty-five miles, across swamps, rivers, and mountains, and having done the Confederacy incalculable harm in 1 See "General Sherman in the Last Year of the Civil War." From the last important stopping-place before reaching Goldsboro, he wrote to Mrs. Sherman as follows: "in The Field, Fayetteville, N. C, Sunday, "March 12, 1865. "We reached this place yesterday in good health and condition. We have had bad roads and weather but made good progress, and have achieved all I aimed to accomplish. Our main columns came through Columbia and Cheraw, South Carolina. We have had no general...
