Book excerpt: This is the annotated edition including the rare biographical essay by Edwin E. Slosson called "H. G. Wells - A Major Prophet Of His Time". The book is also fully illustrated with a wealth of beautiful drawings. "Such previous landings of mermaids as have left a record have all a flavor of doubt.'' Thus Mr. Wells begins his story of the mermaid, and he tells it with the solemnity and detail which make his most preposterous imaginings as credible as an account of the racing at Cowes. His method is to take an impossibility as premise and to follow out the argument quite logically, with just the same surprise at his own conclusion as the reader might be expected to feel. Here the mermaid is the impossibility, and it was not until she came to shore—shamming cramp—at Sandgate to the astonishment of a party of bathers that Mr. Wells believed in the existence of such creatures. So we have this beautiful being arriving from another world projected into the house of the estimable Buntings and the society of Folkestone, where she has, for obvious reasons, to make her public appearances in a bath chair. Miss Waters—such is her terrestrial name—knows a thing or two; for fashion papers flutter from channel steamers, and certain productions of Dr. Richard Garnett seem to have capsized a ship and brought a liberal education to the sea maidens. Moreover, she naturally talks the language of the Rulers of the Waves. But she has no soul, and of course she has never tasted tea. Now Mrs. Bunting cannot imagine a World without Tea. So, remembering that the Sea Lady has no soul, no morals and is immortal, that she has a tail and an affection for a young man already engaged to the earnest Adeline, you will foresee the dreadful confusion caused by her incursion into a respectable middle-class family.

Book excerpt: ‘The Sea Lady’ is ‘The Little Mermaid’ for grownups. Set in Folkestone, the story focuses on a mermaid who comes ashore, with the intent of seducing Harry Chatteris. Living under the name of Doris Thalassia Waters, the mermaid makes it her mission to disrupt his engagement and take Chatteris for herself. Can he withstand her charms, or will he abandon his betrothed? An exploration of the human condition and the desire to fetter our wilder natures, ‘The Sea Lady’ perfectly captures the conventions and attitudes of the time. Herbert George Wells (1866 – 1946) was an English writer, historian, sociologist, and journalist. His interests in technology and time travel (a term he is thought to have coined), have seen him hailed as one of the pioneers of the science-fiction genre. During his career, Wells wrote over 50 novels, alongside more than 60 short stories and numerous historical and scientific papers. Many of his most famous works have been adapted for film and television, such as ‘War of the Worlds,’ starring Tom Cruise, ‘The Island of Dr Moreau,’ starring Val Kilmer, and ‘The Invisible Man,’ starring ‘Elizabeth Moss.’

Distant voices echoed "Saved, Hooray!" Everybody in fact cried "Saved!" except Mrs. Bunting, who was, she says, under the impression that Mr. Bunting was in a fit, and Mr. Bunting, who seems to have been under an impression that all those laws of nature by which, under Providence, we are permitted to float and swim, were in suspense and that the best thing to do was to kick very hard and fast until the end should come. But in a dozen seconds or so his head was up again and his feet were on the ground and he was making whale and walrus noises, and noises like a horse and like an angry cat and like sawing, and was wiping the water from his eyes; and Mrs. Bunting (except that now and then she really had to turn and say "Randolph!") could give her attention to the beautiful burthen that clung about her son.And it is a curRead More
