Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anton Chekov (1860-1904) was a master of the short story. The son of a former serf in southern Russia, he attended Moscow University to study medicine, writing short stories for periodicals in order to support his family. What began as a necessity became a legitimate career in 1886 when he was asked to write in St. Petersburg for the Novoye Vremya (New Times), owned by millionaire magnate Alexey Suvorin. Chekov began paying more attention to his writing, revising and developing his own principles and conceptions of truth, for a time coming under the influence of Leo Tolstoy. As a result of his widespread popularity, Chekov amassed a vast collection of short stories displaying an early use of stream-of-consciousness writing, as well as his powerful ideas concerning the individual, the tedium of life, and the beauty nature and humanity. This edition contains many stories, including "Enemies," "In the Dark," "A Mystery," "Joy," "A Peculiar Man," "The Album," "Overdoing It," "In the Graveyard," and "In a Strange Land."

His poor wife, bustling round him, wore her self out with her efforts. And indeed he, too, was exhausted in the end. When his polished boots were brought him from the kitchen he had not strength to pull them on. He had to lie down and have a drink Of water. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Schoolmaster's Stories: For Boys and Girls Some years ago there was a party of forty or fifty boys who met at my house once a week, and to them I often told stories. They sat on the arms of my chair, hung themselves over the back of it, squatted by my feet on the floor, and leaned on one another's shoulders. I noticed that they were particularly eager for stories that had the smell of the frontier about them. I believe I have told in this book some of the very stories that used to amuse these good fellows, who got a great hold on my heart by listening to my stories and liking them. Dear boys I thought of dedicating the book to them, but they are all gone. Not dead I did not say that. But in five or six years every rascal of them has shot up into some thing like a young man. Some of them are raising little patches of faint-looking beard on their upper lips, and some of them are nearly six feet high. Think of dedicating a story book to sophomores, and store-clerks, and such like 1 It's a way boys have. Just when you think you've got a boy, he turns to a man. Boys and tadpoles are uncertain things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Press and the People is the first full-length study of cheap print in early modern Scotland. It traces the production and distribution of ephemeral publications from the nation's first presses in the early sixteenth century through to the age of Burns in the late eighteenth. It explores the development of the Scottish book trade in general and the production of slight and popular texts in particular. Focusing on the means by which these works reached a wide audience, it illuminates the nature of their circulation in both urban and rural contexts. Specific chapters examine single-sheet imprints such as ballads and gallows speeches, newssheets and advertisements, as well as the little pamphlets that contained almanacs and devotional works, stories and songs. The book demonstrates just how much more of this literature was once printed than now survives and argues that Scotland had a much larger market for such material than has been appreciated. By illustrating the ways in which Scottish printers combined well-known titles from England with a distinctive repertoire of their own, The Press and the People transforms our understanding of popular literature in early modern Scotland and its contribution to British culture more widely.
