Book excerpt: By examining the political development of racial classifications on the national censuses of the United States, Canada, and Great Britain, The Schematic State maps the changing nature of the census from an instrument historically used to manage and control racial populations to its contemporary purpose as an important source of statistical information, employed to monitor and rectify racial discrimination. Through a careful comparative analysis of nearly two hundred years of census taking, it demonstrates that changes in racial schemas are driven by the interactions among shifting transnational ideas about race, the ways they are tempered and translated by nationally distinct racial projects, and the configuration of political institutions involved in the design and execution of census policy. This book argues that states seek to make their populations racially legible, turning the fluid and politically contested substance of race into stable, identifiable categories to be used as the basis of law and policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a comprehensive guide to schematic models of methods engineering, offering a detailed analysis of these models and their applications in a variety of engineering fields. By bringing together the most significant schematic models in a single text and analyzing them according to a common structure, the book enables readers to visualize possible interventions and improvements in work situations. Focused on the conceptualization and analysis of schematic models, the text covers an area of knowledge that is central to production and industrial engineering, but also widely used in other engineering disciplines. The book presents an updated version of a representative set of schematic models, making it an invaluable resource for engineers in the field. With the growing automation of production and the introduction of robotics and the "internet of machines", the use of schematic models is more important than ever in achieving quality and safety in production projects, whether in manufacturing, industrial processes, or services. The book demonstrates how schematic models of methods are essential tools for the study and analysis of current business or production processes, as well as for the implementation of new systems and their maintenance. Overall, this book is a must-read for engineers seeking to improve their knowledge and practical application of schematic models, providing valuable insights and guidance for professionals in a range of engineering fields.

This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing Programs: The Theory and Practice of Schematic Functional Programming describes a diagrammatic (schematic) approach to programming. It introduces a sophisticated tool for programmers who would rather work with diagrams than with text. The language is a complete functional language that has evolved into a representation scheme that is unique. The result is a simple coherent description of the process of modelling with the computer. The experience of using this tool is introduced gradually with examples, small projects and exercises. The new computational theory behind the tool is interspersed between these practical descriptions so that the reasons for the activity can be understood and the activity, in turn, illustrates some elements of the theory Access to the tool, its source code and a set of examples that range from the simple to the complex is free (see www.springer.com/978-1-84882-617-5). A description of the tool’s construction and how it may be extended is also given. The authors’ experience with undergraduates and graduates who have the understanding and skill of a functional language learnt through using schema have also shown an enhanced ability to program in other computer languages. Readers are provided with a set of concepts that will ensure a good robust program design and, what is more important, a path to error free programming.
