Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem and the Catholic School One of the outstanding problems in American rural life today is to be found in the decline of the rural church. Surveys conducted in recent years point to this defect as one of the cancers that are eating the Vitals out of American public life. Religion must enter into the hearts of the people or evil looms up for the future. It is, indeed, only too true that the country church, both in Catholic and non-catholic circles, is not fulfilling the mission for which it was intended. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural Problem of the Church The main point I wish to make to-day is that the so-called Rural Problem is not just another, but is the problem of our church for the present day. It is practically the only question before us which has a right to be called a problem; for the satisfactory settlement of this question will carry with it, to a large extent, the settlement of all questions, whether in church or state. No other question so well deserves the careful study and thought of this Presbytery, and my'one regret about to day's conference is that we have not some one in my place, with the exact knowledge of an expert, and the voice of a prophet, to set before us the cause of the rural dweller and convince us of the opportunity and danger of the time. If any proof of the importance of the rural problem were re quired, it is furnished by the fact that a National Conference on the subject was held in Columbus, Ohio, last December, attended by delegates from all parts of the United States, and opened by President Wilson in person. Ex-president Roose velt said some time ago that with the single exception of the conservation of our natural resources, which underlies the problem of rural life, there is no other material question of greater importance now before the American people. What is true of'the United States is-true of Canada. This is our first and greatest domestic problem, overlapping or including practically all others. It is, of course, nothing new in the world; exploitation of rural populations has been a primarycause of national instability since the beginning of history. Nor is the question one that concerns farmers and country ministers alone. The city is as much concerned in the social welfare of the rural population as are country people them selves. The city is in fact largely a product of the country. Genius is rarely born in the city, and probably nine-tenths of the nation's influential leaders come from the farm. I suspect that the city derives from the country half its brains, two thirds of its wealth and three-quarters of its character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Rural School: Its Characteristics, Its Future, and Its Problems This book is intended for rural school teachers, superintendents, and schoolboard members; for teachers' reading circles, normal school training classes, and all the public at large who arc interested in the profound movement to make our American rural life richer and its labor more effective by means of schools adapted to the changing needs of rural society and the demands of modern life. So far as the public school is concerned the term movement is here used advisedly. It is not used in the destructive sense. It does not seek out a new base for school conduct, nor does it run counter to established laws of life and growth. On the contrary, it is constructive in its use. It aims at fundamental harmony by facing the rural school away from the many artificial interests which have hampered the usefulness of this institution in the past. Indeed, the new movement strives to place the school where the school inherently belongs - in the midst of natural interests where it can prepare the youth for sane, wholesome lives on the farm - the only normal American life of our day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Improvement of the Rural School The improvement of the rural school is, at the present time, one of our most important educational problems. Although it does not present the same aspects in every state, no section is freed from the responsibility of endeavoring to, find its solution. It is not a new problem. Ever since the time of James G. Carter, and of Horace Mann, educators have called attention to the deficiencies of the coun try school. The counts in the indictment which have been brought against it through all these years differ but little, unattractive sites, miserable buildings, insufficient equipment, poorly prepared and poorly paid teachers, inadequate and incom petent supervision, unevenly distributed enrollment, irregular attendance, meager curriculum, and a poorly conducted school. Although it is true that much progress has been made in these particulars during the past three - quarters of a century, and although in certain localities conditions are con sidered fairly satisfactory, the need for reform is more strongly and more generally expressed to - day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rural School, Its Methods and Management Besides school management, the rural teacher needs to know better methods, especially in primary subjects. Realizing this deficiency, a few chapters in primary methods, by Miss Stone, have been added, which are adapted to the work of country schools. Out of an experience of many years as a teacher in rural, village and county high schools, and as a teacher of teachers, have the pages of this book been written; and it is offered to the public with the hope that it may add its mite to the improvement of rural schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rural School, 1922: Survey, of New York State Educational Achievement It is one thing to provide in a school curriculum the necessary means for training children along the lines which society desires. Experience shows that schools often, while making all the necessary formal provisions for such training, fail to achieve the type of finished product desired and intended. It was the function of the Division of Tests and Measurements in the New York survey to make definite inquiry regarding this finished product of the rural schools of the state. It faced not so much the problem of what the schools should teach, as the problem of how well do the schools teach the things which all admit are included in its legitimate teach ing program. /how well do the pupils in these schools learn the things which by common agreement they should learn?
