Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Our Sunday Schools: A Brief, Centenary Narrative of the Origin, History, and Wonderful Progress, of the Sunday Schools of the Primitive Methodist Church Erhaps a brief word of preface may be necessary. The following pages contain the second Morse Lecture. The substance of it was delivered at the eighth Triennial Sunday School Conference on Saturday, October 8th, 1910, Central Church, Derby. The author is conscious that the little work carries with it the evidence of many defects. He would like his readers to judge him mercifully. The Lecture has been completed and passed through the press in the busy year of his Presidency. It should also be remembered that he has no predecessor in the line he has taken. The Lecture represents the first attempt of any sort to tell the story of our Sunday Schools, and the difficulty of gathering the material has been very great. The title given to the Lecture has been chosen, because it appears to be the truest and the best. One of our popular writers has said, in justifying the title of Romance to one of his books The incidents and Characters described are all romantic. With but little modification, the state ment may be adopted as descriptive of the story here told. The romance of the realities Of the religious world is um folded by our narrative. The author desires to express his grateful acknowledgments to a number of friends, and to the authorities of our Publishing House for their kindness in loaning to him old magazines and documents, to the General Sunday School Committee for access to its Minute Books and Records, and to his good colleagues, the Revs. A. Vickers and H. Smith, for their valuable service in helping to correct the proof-sheets. The author. Nottingham. Book excerpt: More teens are turning away from the faith than ever before: it is estimated that 75 to 88% of Christian teens walk away from Christianity by the end of their freshman year of college. Something must be done. Family Driven Faith equips Christian parents with the tools they need to raise children biblically in a post-Christian, anti-family society. Voddie Baucham, who with his wife has overcome a multi-generational legacy of broken and dysfunctional homes, shows that God has not left us alone in raising godly children. He has given us timeless precepts and principles for multi-generational faithfulness, especially in Deuteronomy 6. God's simple command to Moses to teach the Word diligently to the children of Israel serves as the foundation of Family Driven Faith. - Publisher.

Book excerpt: When Dr. Henrietta Mears began her ministry in Hollywood, California, in the 1930s, she was facing several challenges. Sixty percent of children at the time were not attending a church of any sort. Fewer than fifteen percent of children who attended Sunday School ever made a decision to follow Jesus. Youth in their early college years were walking away from faith at an unprecedented rate. Church attendance across the United States was experiencing a decline instead of growth. In response to the crisis, Dr. Mears instituted a set of principles that helped grow the Sunday School program at First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood from 450 to more than 4,000 in just three years. In Sunday School Changes Everything, you will find her fearless recommendations on how to Build your church's Christian education program both numerically and spiritually Use practical methods for training your leaders and teaching students of all stages of life Implement five ingredients of successful ministry: Jesus, the Bible, relationships, a comprehensive plan, and life change Employ 10 standards of a good curriculum that will help you answer the question of what to teach

Book excerpt: A journey from faith via evidence. Why a university professor gave up religion and became an unbeliever. Rob J Hyndman is Professor of Statistics at Monash University, Australia. He was a Christadelphian for nearly 30 years, and was well-known as a writer and Bible teacher within the Christadelphian community. He gave up Christianity when he no longer thought that there was sufficient evidence to support belief in the Bible. This is a personal memoir describing Rob's journey of deconversion. Until recently, he was regularly speaking at church conferences internationally, and his books are still used in Bible classes and Sunday Schools around the world. He even helped establish an innovative new church, which became a model for similar churches in other countries. Eventually he came to the view that he was mistaken, and that there was little or no evidence that the Bible was inspired or that God exists. In this book, he reflects on how he was fooled, and why he changed his mind. Whether you agree with his conclusions or not, you will be led to reflect on the nature of faith and evidence, and how they interact.
