Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of American Landscape IN the following discursive pages the author has taken a brief, but he hopes an intelligent, glimpse at the varying characteristics Of the beautiful natural scenery of our country. It has been his endeavour, throughout, SO to relieve the gravity of fact With the gracerof fiction, as to present at the same time an in structive topography and an entertaining romance. The better to accomplish this difficult end, he has assem bled around him a company Of accomplished and genial travellers, Who discuss the subject familiarly in all its phases, each from his own peculiar stand-point and after his own individuality. It' is not necessary that the reader be here presented to these gentlemen, since they Will shake him by the hand, and tell him What manner of men they are, in the first chapter, - which subserves the usual rdle Of a preface, but is too much an integral and important part Of the narrative to be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Arcadian Days: American Landscapes in Nature and Art Cold types and rebellious pigments alike are inadequate means of expression. The simplest rustic subjects have seemed the best, because they are the most familiar. It is hoped that some of these sketches may appeal by their truthfulness to the reader's pleasant memories. But the whole value of the work, if it has any value, lies in its tendency, in what it merely hints at, the great desirability, for in stance, Of using one's own eyes and of cultivat ing one's powers of observation; for how much of pleasure and profit this might add to the lives of most people, no matter in what particular sphere of action they may be placed! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American landscapes are some of the most well-known images of any kind - the Manhattan skyline, Monument Valley, the Grand Canyon and Niagara Falls are instantly recognisable in a thousand ads and TV shows. But how have these places come to be as they are, and why are some places familiar while others are quite unknown? This book introduces the reader to the changing face of the American environment, tracing the way in which the present array of forests and farms, parks and highways, cities and suburbs has come about, and how these changes have been thought about, painted and turned into movie sets. From Thelma and Louise to Northern Exposure, the book concludes that the American landscape is what Americans have made of their surroundings.

Book excerpt: Picturesque Literature and the Transformation of the American Landcape, 1835-1874 recovers the central role that the picturesque, a popular mode of scenery appreciation that advocated for an improved and manipulated natural landscape, played in the social, spatial, and literary history of mid-nineteenth century America. It argues that the picturesque was not simply a landscape aesthetic, but also a discipline of seeing and imaginatively shaping the natural that was widely embraced by bourgeois Americans to transform the national landscape in their own image. Through the picturesque, mid-century bourgeois Americans remade rural spaces into tourist scenery, celebrated the city streets as spaces of cultural diversity, created new urban public parks, and made suburban domesticity a national ideal. This picturesque transformation was promoted in a variety of popular literary genres, all focused on landscape description and all of which trained readers into the protocols of picturesque visual discipline as social reform. Many of these genres have since been dubbed "minor" or have been forgotten by our literary history, but the ranks of the writers of this picturesque literature include everyone from the most canonical (Hawthorne, Melville, Thoreau, Emerson, and Poe), to major authors of the period now less familiar (such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Lydia Maria Child, Nathaniel Parker Willis, and Margaret Fuller), to those now completely forgotten. Individual chapters of the book link picturesque literary genres to the spaces that the genres helped to transform and, in the process, create what is recognizably our modern American landscape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Before I knew that I was Jewish or a girl I knew that I was a member of the working class.” So begins Vivian Gornick’s exploration of how the world of socialists, communists, and progressives in the 1940s and 1950s created a rich, diverse world where ordinary men and women felt their lives connected to a larger human project. Now back in print after its initial publication in 1977 and with a new introduction by the author, The Romance of American Communism is a landmark work of new journalism, profiling American Communist Party members and fellow travelers as they joined the Party, lived within its orbit, and left in disillusionment and disappointment as Stalin’s crimes became public. From the immigrant Jewish enclaves of the Bronx and Brooklyn and the docks of Puget Sound to the mining towns of Kentucky and the suburbs of Cleveland, over a million Americans found a sense of belonging and an expanded sense of self through collective struggle. They also found social isolation, blacklisting, imprisonment, and shattered hopes. This is their story--an indisputably American story.
