Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Indian Empire: Its Rise and Growth We premise a few of the more striking physical characteristics of the Indian continent. In extreme length it measures one thousand nine hundred miles, in extreme breadth one thousand five hundred. The area of British India, apart from tributary and independent states, is twelve times that of Great Britain and Ireland, seven times that of France. Northern India, i.e., India north of the Vindhya Mountains and Nerbudda River, is sometimes distinguished as Hindostan, Southern India as the Deckan (from dakshana - south). The population of the continent is two hundred and forty millions, of whom five-sixths are Hindus, one-sixth Mohammedans. In shape India forms a triangle, the base of which is buried under the snows of the Himalayas, the apex within a few degrees of the equator, and the two sides washed by the Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean. The whole interior of the Deckan is a lofty table-land, the home of large kingdoms, and enjoying of course a cooler climate than the narrow plains which stretch thence to the sea. The mountain-sides of this plateau are called ghauts (steps). India is thus clearly marked off by nature from surrounding countries, and admirably adapted to be the abode of a self-contained people, such as the Hindus have always been. The Brahmins, indeed, who have moulded the civilization of India, cannot claim to be its original inhabitants. These are found in the few, sattered mountain-tribes, such as the Bheels, Kols, and Gonds, who have nothing in common with modern Hindus. Excerpt: ...miles of sea: " With regard to the magnitude of our possessions " be not staggered. Assure yourself that the Company " must either be what they are or be annihilated." But even without any view as to the future, and looking solely at the present, Lord Clive might boast, that by his treaty he had secured to his countrymen a net revenue annually of 2,000,000/. He might boast, that he had freed them from any further dependence on the character or the conduct, the intrigues or the cabals, of the successive heirs of Meer Jaffier, whom he reduced, in fact, to little more than high pensioners of state. Nevertheless, it formed a part of the policy of Clive, that the whole detail of the revenue department should still, for some time at least, be directed by a native Prime Minister, resident at Moorshedabad but responsible only to Calcutta. Two competitors appeared for this great oifice--Nuncomar at the head of the Brahmins--Mahomed Reza Khan at the head of the Mussulmans. There seemed a manifest advantage in preferring the former, as representing by far the greater numbers in race and in religion. Such was also the desire of Clive. But on full examination it appeared that the character of Nuncomar was stained by more than one act of fraud and even forgery. Moreover, at this very time, as Clive complains, he was seeking to establish a most pernicious influence on the mind of the young Nabob. "It is really " shocking," writes the hero of Plassey, " what a set of "miserable and mean wretches Nuncomar has placed " about him; men who the other day were horse-keepers." On the whole, therefore, after great deliberation, the choice of Clive fell upon Mahomed Reza Khan. Having thus dealt with the...
