Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States The preparation of the following pages has been undertaken at the suggestion of friends, seconded by the convictions of my own mind, that a small volume on the Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States would not be an unacceptable offering to the Public, and especially the Christian Public, at the present time. Whatever I have before prepared or published on the subject has been freely used, whenever it has suited my purpose, in the present composition. I have endeavored to confine myself to the Religious Instruction of the Negroes, and have touched upon other subjects only when it has been necessary for the illustration or support of the one before me. I commend the Book to the candid consideration of those who read it. My design has been to speak the truth plainly and in love, and to do good. May the blessing of Almighty God attend the effort. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2019 Reprint of 1842 Edition. Charles Colcock Jones' The Religious Instruction of the Negroes in the United States is an dramatic call for the white ministers and slaveowners to attend to the spiritual needs of slaves and free blacks. The book is broken into four parts. The first part is an historical sketch of slavery in the Colonies and the United States, with a focus on missionary and religious efforts directed towards the African slaves. This account goes from 1620 to 1842, going year by year after 1792. Jones closes this first part with a summary of each denomination and each state. The second part treats the "Moral and Religious Condition" of slaves and free blacks, blaming their circumstances for their lack of virtue. Jones especially calls attention to their poverty and lack of education. He describes their ignorance of Christianity, their general lack of character, and their prevailing vices, noting that in the end, they are totally dependent on white men for the ability to overcome these limitations. In light of this description, Jones goes on in the third part to describe the obligations of the Christian church to rectify these problems. He asserts that the religious education of the African part of the population is a duty no Christian can ignore, then goes on to refute a whole catalogue of excuses and objections to that assertion. In addition, he lists several benefits of religious instruction. The final part of the book proposes some strategies for implementing programs of religious instruction for slaves, making recommendations for Sabbath services as well as weekday plantation meetings. Jones says that the Christian gospel must be presented in a way that is intelligible to uneducated slaves and must be inculcated early in childhood when possible. The guiding principle he describes for dealing with the condition of the slave is to be only concerned with the spiritual, not the secular, political, or civil. Jones concludes with pointed exhortations to masters, ministers, and the church at large, calling them all to devote more attention to the religious instruction of the African part of the American population.

Book excerpt: Slavery and racism in the United States run hand in hand and the silver screen is littered with dramatic representations of the hot, hazy environment of the Slave States at their height. The popular imagination is familiar with the white plantation house, the sugar cane and the cotton. Those who seek to peer deeper into the ways in which the people who filled those palaces and piles thought will be well served by 'The Religious Instruction of the Negroes'. As a Presbyterian minister and the son of a Plantation owner, Charles Colcock Jones is the epitome of the establishment voice for this time and place. His reflections will run profoundly counter to the modern reader's sense of human equality but the ways in which he does and does not allow the humanity of the black population are in themselves fascinating. Read the praise he has for 'colored ministers' but brace for the descriptions of the flaws he believes he sees in the black population of the plantations he has visited. He explores largely by accident the economic realities of the plantation, the requirements of the work force, the rhythms of the seasons, the high days and holidays. He takes a particularly pragmatic approach to proselytising, ready to sell down the river any denominational quirks for the overall objective of transmitting what he saw as the core elements of Christian doctrine. The twin threads of socially enforced bigotry and radicalism run through this tract and the opportunity to see that cognitive dissonance and step into the 19th century should not be missed. Book excerpt: Published in 1842, this book provides an early glimpse into the religious practices and beliefs of African Americans in the southern United States. Jones, a Presbyterian minister and slave owner, advocates for the religious education of enslaved people as a means of improving their moral character and reducing the risk of rebellion. He presents his own experiences and observations along with biblical references to support his argument.
