Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bioeconomic models can provide powerful insights into the interactions between people and the natural ecosystems on which they depend. For example, bioeconomic models of fisheries have long been used to provide early warnings about the sustainability of harvest levels or the impacts of new technologies. Less progress has been made in explicitly incorporating inter-agent interactions and institutions in bioeconomic models. This paper offers guidance to future bioeconomic modelling efforts through a review of the ways that institutions are or could be explicitly integrated into bioeconomic models. The overall conclusions of the review are as follows: (1) assumptions about institutions are often implicit in the construction of bioeconomic models; (2) the general structure of bioeconomic models provides several possible ways that institutions can be explicitly integrated; and (3) relatively simple approaches for explicitly integrating institutions into bioeconomic models can yield important insights. We recommend that analysts who are interested in explicitly incorporating institutions into bioeconomic models: (1) Clarify the theoretical foundations of empirical models; (2) Look for the easiest ways to explicitly depict institutions through constraints and parameters; (3) Give greater consideration to the depiction of feedback processes between outcomes and institutions; (4) Use new tools, such as social network analysis and experimental economics, to characterize behavior that is difficult to observe; and (5) Sustain and integrate modeling efforts.

Book excerpt: The Wiley-Interscience Paperback Series consists of selected books that have been made more accessible to consumers in an effort to increase global appeal and general circulation. With these new unabridged softcover volumes, Wiley hopes to extend the lives of these works by making them available to future generations of statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. Mathematical Bioeconomics: Optimal Management of Renewable Resources, Second Edition serves as an introduction to the theory of biological conservation, including a wealth of applications to the fishery and forestry industries. The mathematical modeling of the productive aspects of renewable-resource management is explained, featuring both economic and biological factors, with much attention paid to the optimal use of resource stocks over time. This Second Edition provides new chapters on the theory of resource regulation and on stochastic resource models, new sections on irreversible investment, game-theoretic models, dynamic programming, and an expanded bibliography. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a simple dynamic model dealing with the management of a renewable resource. But instead of studying the ecological and economic interactions in terms of equilibrium or optimal control, we pay much attention to the viability of the system or, in a symmetric way, to crisis situations. These viability/crisis situations are defined by a set of economic and biological state constraints. The analytical study focus on the compatibility between the state constraints and the controlled dynamics. Using the mathematical concept of viability kernal, we reveal the situations and, if possible, management options to guarantee a perennial system. Going further, we define "overexploitation" indicators by the time of crisis function. In particular, we point out irreversible overexploitation configurations related to the resource extinction.

Book excerpt: Capture fisheries make contributions to the world economy that are below their potential. Many of the world's capture fishery resources have been overexploited with some facing collapse. This book presents an overview of the current economics of capture fisheries and examines how they can achieve their full economic potential

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of environmental dilemmas and political conflicts leads us to appreciate the need for individuals and groups to behave strategically in order to achieve their goals and maintain their wellbeing. Global issues such as climate change, resource depletion, and pollution, as well as revolts and protests against corporations, regimes, and other central authorities, are the result of increased levels of externalities among individuals and nations. These all require policy intervention at international and global levels. This book includes chapters by experts proposing game theoretical solutions and applying experimental design to a variety of social issues related to global and international conflicts over natural resources and the environment. The focus of the book is on applications that have policy implications, relevance and, consequently, could lead to the establishment of policy dialogue. The chapters in the book address issues that are global in nature, such as international environmental agreements over climate change, international water management, common pool resources, public goods, international fisheries, international trade, and collective action, protest, and revolt. The book's main objective is to illustrate the usefulness of game theory and experimental economics in policy making at multiple levels and for various aspects related to global and international issues. The subject area of this book is already widely taught and researched, but it continues to gain popularity, given growing recognition that the environment and natural resources have become more strategic in human behavior.
