Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although sexual psychophysiology has made great strides over the past few decades, the progress made has not been accompanied by much effort to integrate research findings or to stimulate methodological and theoretical discussions among researchers. Yet this new research area has the potential to make substantial contributions to understanding a wide range of phenomena, including the spread of HIV/STIs, sexual "addiction" or compulsivity, the use (or nonuse) of birth-control methods, sexual infidelity, and aggressive sexual behaviors. Psychophysiological methods can assist in the exploration of the underlying psychological, physiological, and affective processes, and, perhaps more importantly, how they interact. In this volume, editor Erick Janssen brings together wide-ranging essays written by an authoritative group of researchers, representing the cutting edge of sexual psychophysiology.

Book excerpt: What can psychology teach us about sex? How do different bodies and brains respond sexually? How can we prevent people being stigmatised for their sexuality? The Psychology of Sex takes you on a tour through the different ways that psychologists have created and sustained certain understandings of sex and sexuality. Bearing in mind the subjective nature of sex, the book explores cultural concerns around sexualisation, pornography, and sex addiction, as well as drawing on research from sexual communities and the applied area of sex therapy. When so much of our relationship to sex happens in the mind, The Psychology of Sex shows us how important it is to understand where our ideas about sex come from.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an engaging and comprehensive resource for high school and college students on modern topics in human sexuality, covering subjects such as gender roles and dating to sexual orientation and sex itself. Part of Greenwood's The Psychology of Everyday Life series, this book gives readers a single-stop resource for learning about the intersections of psychology, human attraction, sexuality, cultural norms, and sexual behavior. Written in a compelling and straightforward style, readers will enjoy learning about the subject and come away with a new perspective on sex and sexuality. This overview covers popular topics in human sexuality such as the ubiquitous forms of sex in society (e.g., gender roles, sexual orientation, media and technology, cultural norms about sex), the importance of sex in every individual's life, the positive and negative effects of sex, specific psychological theories and theorists, sex over the developmental lifespan, and different cultural perspectives on topics in human sexuality. The presentation of topics in the book builds logically on previously covered material; however, the information is presented so that students looking for specific information can read chapters out of order and still understand the primary content areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition contains three studies which seem to me to be necessary prolegomena to that analysis of the sexual instinct which must form the chief part of an investigation into the psychology of sex. The first sketches the main outlines of a complex emotional state which is of fundamental importance in sexual psychology; the second, by bringing together evidence from widely different regions, suggests a tentative explanation of facts that are still imperfectly known; the third attempts to show that even in fields where we assume our knowledge to be adequate a broader view of the phenomena teaches us to suspend judgment and to adopt a more cautious attitude. So far as they go, these studies are complete in themselves; their special use, as an introduction to a more comprehensive analysis of sexual phenomena, is that they bring before us, under varying aspects, a characteristic which, though often ignored, is of the first importance in obtaining a clear understanding of the facts: the tendency of the sexual impulse to appear in a spontaneous and to some extent periodic manner, affecting women differently from men. This is a tendency which, later, I hope to make still more apparent, for it has practical and social, as well as psychological, implications. Here—and more especially in the study of those spontaneous solitary manifestations which I call auto-erotic—I have attempted to clear the ground, and to indicate the main lines along which the progress of our knowledge in these fields may best be attained.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychology of Sex and Gender is an engaging and empirical text that not only introduces students to foundational (i.e., historical/contextual) understandings in the topic of sex and gender, but also moves them into cutting-edge topics and research that encourages them to (re)think their perceptions of the gendered world around them. It goes beyond the "standard coverage", presenting topics with recognition of the biopsychosocial nature of sex and gender and encouraging students to examine the basis of similarities and differences within and between the sexes. Many textbooks in this domain focus more on women's studies or psychology of women without much coverage of men's issues. Burns provides a comprehensive and balanced sex/gender perspective integrating contemporary research. In addition, this text provides an integration of current and relevant (mis)representations of issues related to sex and gender as a means for furthering students' awareness of the gendered world in which they live.
