After half a century of incessant labor in a new field of research full of intrinsic difficulties, I have found the boasted modern civilization only more refined and varied in its methods of perse cation and of torture. Some fine instances may be read in my Darkest America; see also foot note, p. Xi of this book. Therefore much time and labor has been withdrawn from the loved work of research, and I have not yet been permitted to complete my final exposition of the mechanics of the three states of aggregation and the structure of the crystals.
