Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fresh assessment of Ovid's fascinating poem Fasti, Alessandro Barchiesi provides a new vision of the interaction between Ovid and the renowned ruler Augustus. Fasti, a poem about the holidays and feast days of the Roman calendar, was written while Ovid was in Rome and revised while he was in exile on the barbarian frontier, banished by Augustus from the cultured society of Rome. Ovid's work in exile evinces complicated motives; he addresses Augustus and begs him to lift the despised exile, but at the same time covertly critiques Augustus's "New Rome." Although recent scholarship has concentrated on the oppositions between poet and ruler revealed in Ovid's work, Barchiesi's analysis transcends the opposition of pro-Augustan or anti-Augustan readings. In a lively, vigorous narrative that relies on close textual analysis, Barchiesi underscores the important poetic choices as well as the political considerations made by Ovid in Fasti. Ultimately, his analysis leads us to a more nuanced understanding of the relationship between patrons and poets. Both scholars and general readers will find a newly meaningful and interesting Ovid in these pages. Translated with revisions from Il poeta e il principe: Ovido e il discorso Augusteo (1994).

Book excerpt: "This volume presents both a documentary survey of Spenser's poetic reputation and an introduction to the chief problems posed by his poetry to the modern reader. The earlier portion of the book is devoted to the landmarks of Spenser criticism and scholarship. Later parts deal with modern scholarly writings on Spenser with sections devoted to the poetic values of his age. The longest section is devoted to The Faerie Queene. Carefully chosen for their direct relevance to the question that modern readers are likely to ask when reading Spenser, the majority of the essays seek to explain the differences between Spenser's poetry and modern poetry by relating it to Renaissance literary culture. The Editor says in his introduction, "Perhaps no major English poet has received a more appreciate rereading in recent times than Edmund Spenser. For years relegated to the dusty shelf reserved for authors politely honored but seldom read, Spenser has been on of the chief beneficiaries of our renewed interest in an understanding of Renaissance art. With the discovery by modern readers of the intellectual complexity and artistic coherence of literary forms that once seemed merely naive and disordered, Spenser has emerged from the shadow of Marlowe, Shakespeare, and Donne to lay claim once again to his title as 'The Prince of Poets in his Tyme." -Publisher.

Book excerpt: “In this vibrant memoir, Obama-inaugural poet Richard Blanco tenderly, exhilaratingly chronicles his Miami childhood amid a colorful, if suffocating, family of Cuban exiles, as well as his quest to find his artistic voice and the courage to accept himself as a gay man.” — O, The Oprah Magazine A poignant, hilarious, and inspiring memoir from the first Latino and openly gay inaugural poet, which explores his coming-of-age as the child of Cuban immigrants and his attempts to understand his place in America while grappling with his burgeoning artistic and sexual identities. Richard Blanco’s childhood and adolescence were experienced between two imaginary worlds: his parents’ nostalgic world of 1950s Cuba and his imagined America, the country he saw on reruns of The Brady Bunch and Leave it to Beaver—an “exotic” life he yearned for as much as he yearned to see “la patria.” A prismatic and lyrical narrative rich with the colors, sounds, smells, and textures of Miami, Richard Blanco’s personal narrative is a resonant account of how he discovered his authentic self and ultimately, a deeper understanding of what it means to be American. His is a singular yet universal story that beautifully illuminates the experience of “becoming;” how we are shaped by experiences, memories, and our complex stories: the humor, love, yearning, and tenderness that define a life.

Book excerpt: The Collected poems of F.T. Prince introduces to the United States the great English outsider poet of his generation (the generation of Auden and Spender). Apparently traditional, Prince explores the lost and often unseen details of human experience. He is one of the poetic fathers of young English and American poets who, despite their more open forms, often arrive at the terrain already occupied by F.T. Prince.--Cover.
