Book excerpt: "The primary focus of this study is to demonstrate an efficient approach for uncertainty quantification of surface heat flux to the spherical non-ablating heatshield of a generic reentry vehicle due to epistemic and aleatory uncertainties that may exist in various parameters used in the numerical solution of hypersonic, viscous, laminar blunt-body flows with thermo-chemical non-equilibrium. Two main uncertainty sources were treated in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations: (1) aleatory uncertainty in the freestream velocity and (2) epistemic uncertainty in the recombination efficiency for a partially catalytic wall boundary condition. The Second-Order Probability utilizing a stochastic response surface obtained with Point-Collocation Non-Intrusive Polynomial Chaos was used for the propagation of mixed (aleatory and epistemic) uncertainties. The uncertainty quantication approach was validated on a stochastic model problem with mixed uncertainties for the prediction of stagnation point heat transfer with Fay-Riddell relation, which included the comparison with direct Monte Carlo sampling results. In the stochastic CFD problem, the uncertainty in surface heat transfer was obtained in terms of intervals at different probability levels at various locations including the stagnation point and the shoulder region. The mixed uncertainty results were compared to the results obtained with a purely aleatory uncertainty analysis to show the difference between two uncertainty quantication approaches. A global sensitivity analysis indicated that the velocity has a stronger contribution to the overall uncertainty in the stagnation point heat transfer for the range of input uncertainties considered in this study"--Abstract, leaf iii

Book excerpt: The development of complex lifting configurations and high speed maneuvering vehicles has emphasized the need for numerical techniques to predict aerodynamic heating rates as a function of the vehicle trajectory. These numerical programs are not expected to eliminate the requirements for wind tunnel and flight testing, but will be an aid to more efficient use of experimentation time and improve confidence that all potential problem areas on the vehicle have been examined. Three programs, the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, the MINIVER Program, and a third program were examined to determine their usefulness for vehicles with non-circular cross sections and large flat areas as exemplified by lifting reentry vehicles. The MINIVER code was found to be unsuitable for this; the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program was applicable to these shapes, but because of program limitations was used for only limited calculations. The last program also had limitations in the areas of geometry description and surface pressure calculations. Efforts were made to remove these limitations and several shapes were investigated. The ultimate goal of this effort was to extend the capabilities of one or more of the heating codes; while no effort was made to improve MINIVER or the Hypersonic Arbitrary Body Program, significant improvements were made in the last program and inviscid flow field program.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic heating of space vehicles during reentry with constant aerodynamic coefficients is considered. General relations for the conditions at the maximum heating rate, and for the total heat input at the stagnation point from entry to any point in the trajectory, are developed. The relations are not subject to the restrictions of skip or exit trajectories with entry velocity greater than the circular speed. The relation presented for the heat input has 2 parts. The first, which is the most significant part of the heat input, is of closed form. The second part is left in terms of an integral and evaluated by Simpson's rule. Only a small number of steps are required in the numerical evaluation of this integral, thus making this solution much shorter than direct numerical integration. The numerical results calculated from this solution show good agreement with those from the direct numerical integration. (Author).

Book excerpt: An investigation was made of means of reducing temperatures on the wing leading edge of hypersonic glide re-entry vehicles. A heat transfer analysis was made of an arbitrary shaped wing leading edge. The analysis includes convection, internal and external radiation, and conduction as mechanisms of heat transfer. The wing leading edge temperature distribution is obtained from a computer program. An investigation was conducted for a typical re-entry vehicle. The basis of results obtained was the temperature distribution on a cylindrical leading edge, obtained without conduction or internal radiation in the analysis. The variables considered were exterior shape back plate shape and orientation, and the physical properties of conductivity, emissivity and wall thickness. A reduction in peak nose temperature of about 700 F was obtained by optimization of the exterior shape, orientation of the back plate and by including conduction and radiation in the analysis. The investigation of material properties demonstrated that external emissivity is the only property of major consequence. (Author).
