Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Lord's Prayer can be spoken at the cradle or the grave. It can rise from the altars of great cathedrals and from the dark hovels of those who eat their bread with tears. It can be prayed at weddings and on the gallows. All seven colours of our life are contained in it, and so there is never a time when we are left alone.' In these sermons delivered in the shattered city of Stuttgart during the last days of the war, Helmut Thielicke examined the Lord's Prayer phrase by phrase, drawing from it both immediate comfort and inspiration for the future. As he expounded upon the inner meaning of the familiar phrases, he enabled his despairing congregation to share in this promise of hope - to see the world in a new way, through prayer. Today, for those who are prepared to listen, his words still carry the same power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dangerous Prayer offers a strategy for fostering prayer and spirituality in mission that focuses on neighbourhood transformation and global needs using the Lord's Prayer as a radical blueprint. Sustainability in mission is not possible without prayer; vibrancy in prayer is not possible without mission. Christians on mission need a vibrant life of prayer in order to be effective yet to have a vibrant prayer life they need an outlet in mission. The Lord's Prayer offers a radical inspirational framework to help move Christians beyond praying just for themselves and to have their imaginations captured by the mission of God and concern for global needs. Jesus' words guide us to pray for God's Kingdom on earth, for restoration, for food for all who are hungry, for people to experience forgiveness and all that really is good news about Jesus. It is a dangerous prayer because of its counter-cultural and radical stance, and because it invites us to be, in part, the answer to our prayers. This book offers inspiring and practical approaches for unleashing the whole people of God for missional prayer and prayerful mission.

Book excerpt: For Christians, one of our earliest lessons—and greatest gifts—is learning how to pray. And yet many of us believe our prayer lives fall short. In When God Is Silent, John Koessler reassures us that this has nothing to do with motivation or method. Our problems are relational, and recognizing this is the first step to having a better prayer life. Prayer is a conversation that moves primarily in one direction: from the believer who prays to the God who hears. If God appears silent, that does not mean that he is unresponsive. We always have God's attention. This book does more than answer questions like how and why we should pray—it also invites us to gain a sense of God, of his goodness, and the rich welcome that is waiting for us every time we approach him in the name of Jesus Christ.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lord s Prayer is arguably the most important prayer in Christianity. Still, exactly how the prayer developed in the life of the early church has remained hidden in ancient manuscripts. Hammerling s thorough and ground-breaking examination of these works reveals that early authors enthusiastically expounded upon its power and mystery, claiming that the prayer uttered by Christ belonged at the core of Christian ritual and beliefs. Many early church writers labeled it a "perfect summary of the gospel" and joyously referred to it as a pearl of great price and worth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the beginning of lockdown in 2020, the online newsletter of Cupar Old Parish Church became a focus for the church’s life. I offered to join the small team who prepared weekly Reflections for it in support of our minister Rev Jeff Martin. Jeff followed a study guide, We Take the Road by Walking by Brian McLaren in many of his weekly sermons during the first year of restrictions. I followed his lead with digressions to respond to what was happening at the time; for some Saints’ Days, and to consider some Bible passages from the Common Lectionary. I have never been much of an original thinker, preferring to recycle other people’s insights. I always kept a large notebook of snippets and ideas for sermons and have dipped liberally into it in preparing these articles. Unfortunately, I didn’t always note where I had found these bits and pieces and apologise if I have failed to attribute any of my quotes to their authors. Above all, my prayer is that we might all find renewed joy and hope as we walk the road of Christian faith together following this time of acute pandemic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christians have always turned to the Sermon on the Mount for inspiration. In Life Can Begin Again, Helmut Thielicke, himself one of the great preachers of the twentieth century, comes to grips with what is often seen as a collection of lovely but impossible ideals. Thielicke makes it clear that the Sermon on the Mount can never be understood if, even for a moment, we forget the person of the Preacher of the Sermon. For without the person and work of Jesus Christ the marvellous words of the Beatitudes and the injunctions that follow them are the most radical and devastating distillation of God's claims that can be conceived - they leave us in utter hopeless dismay. Only through Christ can these words of the law become the glorious Gospel that promises a new life. Once again, as in his other best-selling works How the World Began and The Prayer that Spans the World, Thielicke brings profoundly biblical religion alive for modern readers.

Book excerpt: You pray it. But do you understand it? The Lord's Prayer has become so familiar to us that we don't think about what we're praying. It's a portrait of Jesus' heart. And in it Christians from different times, places, and traditions have been united. We pray it, but do we actually believe it? When Jesus taught his followers how to pray, he emphasized how uncomplicated it should be. There's no need for pretense or theatrics. Instead, simply ask for what you need as though you were speaking with your earthly father. This opens a window into Jesus' prayer life and presents us with a portrait of his heart for his followers. Wesley Hill re-introduces the Lord's Prayer. He shows us a God who is delighted to hear prayer. Petition by petition, in conversation with the Christian tradition, he draws out the significance of Jesus' words for prayer today.
