Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Hegel and Plato are towering figures in the history of philosophy, but often readers puzzle over what they are saying. There are very few books that deal with them clearly and intelligently. Hardly any that do so jointly. This book is exceptional in offering a clear, scholarly and intelligent guide to their work. It focuses upon how Plato and Hegel deal with nature. While recognising the subtlety of Plato and Hegel on nature, Vicky Roupa establishes a nuanced yet clear exposition of their thought. The bonus is that the books is written in a highly readable style. This is a great book!” – Gary Browning, Professor of Political Thought, Oxford Brookes University This book examines nature as a foundational concept for political and constitutional theory, drawing on readings from Plato and Hegel to counter the view that optimal political arrangements are determined by nature. Focussing on the dialectical implications of the word ‘nature’, i.e. how it encompasses a range of meanings stretching up to the opposites of sensuousness and ideality, the book explores the various junctures at which nature and politics interlock in the philosophies of Plato and Hegel. Appearance and essence, inner life and public realm, the psychical and the political are all shown to be parts of a conflictual structure that requires both infinite proximity and irreducible distance. The book offers innovative interpretations of a number of key texts by Plato and Hegel to highlight the metaphysical and political implications of nature’s dialectical structure, and re-appraises their thinking of nature in a way that both respects and goes beyond their intentions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Political Philosophies of Plato and Hegel This work purports to be an essay in the history of philosophy, and although I shall expose myself to an obvious rebuke if I attach a long preface to a little book, I cannot refrain from giving expression here to my convie tion that, whatever may have been possible in past ages, there can be for us no genuine science of philosophy which is not based wholly on the study of the history of philo 30phy. I think, indeed, that the metaphor of basis and superstructure is inadequate to the intimacy of the rela tion between philosophy and the study of its history. It might be held to imply no more than that a study of the history of philosophy is an indispensable propaedeutic stage in the training of a philosopher, which he must have passed before his proper activity begins. I Should make a higher claim for it than that. This study is not only indispensable to educate the judgement of one who is to philosophize sanely; it is the means by which he must continue to philo s0phize. To philosophize is to study the history of philo sophy philosophically. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Hegel and Plato are united as political theorists by the convergence of their philosophical aspirations. But their political writings manifest the general disparities involved in their particular ways of seeking to fulfil these aspirations. Professor Browning compares the political thought of Plato and Hegel by locating their political theorizing within the context of their divergent modes of philosophizing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1971, this volume was created to commemorate the bicentenary of Hegel's birth in 1770. Thirteen essays are included from experts with diverse approaches, concentrating on the central issues of Hegel's political philosophy, and covering all of the major political works. These essays demonstrate the vitality of Hegel's philosophical perspective, engaging the reader and providing a way into the often difficult explication of his ideas. Whilst this is a commemorative edition, and the views put forward are broadly sympathetic, a critical distance is maintained, allowing for numerous fresh insights. Accessible and highly informative, this book will be of value to anyone with an interest in Hegelian thought and its political implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book relates Hegel to preceding and succeeding political philosophers. The Hegelian notion of the interdependence of political philosophy and its history is demonstrated by the links established between Hegel and his predecessors and successors. Hegel's political theory is illuminated by essays showing its critical assimilation of Plato and Hobbes, and by studies reviewing subsequent critiques of its standpoint by Stirner, Marx and Collingwood. The relevance of Hegel to contemporary political philosophy is highlighted in essays which compare Hegel to Lyotard and Rawls.
