Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small group uniquely benefits from the ubiquitously available connective possibilities of mobile communication technologies. The group chat feature of mobile instant messaging applications (MIMAs, e.g., WhatsApp, Signal) provides small groups with a permanently accessible communication place where members can relay information to all others at once, independent of their spatiotemporal location. The resulting permanent collective addressability (PCA) of members has implications for group processes (e.g., group coordination, socio-emotional concerns of members). This book investigates the communicative activity in MIMA chats of 18 naturally occurring, goal-oriented groups in a non-professional setting using a standardized content analysis. It thus extends findings on individual-level expectations of permanent connectedness and shows how a group using such technology can be understood as a permanently connected group (PeCoG) and group-level manifestation of the hybridity of mediated and face-to-face communication constituting our current communication reality. Above all, this book demonstrates the potential of small group research to describe current phenomena relevant to communication science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible, engaging, and timely overview of the key debates surrounding the role of mobile media in today’s society. Edited by Thilo von Pape and Veronika Karnowski, this volume includes contributions from a variety of geographical and disciplinary backgrounds, reflecting the diverse standpoints within the field of mobile media and communication. The collection explores perspectives from the micro-level of individual or small group appropriation of mobile media, to the uses and effects among larger communities, public spaces, and societies at large. The chapters address individual uses and effects of mobile media, such as problematic smartphone use, news consumption through mobile media, and mobile media as an empowerment tool for entrepreneurs. They also discuss the role of mobile media in private and professional social constellations (phubbing, personal mobile device use at work) and in struggles over personal empowerment, counter-power, and global development. Looking beyond the smartphone, the book also explores underlying infrastructures and emerging technologies such as augmented and virtual reality. This book is a key resource for students and scholars of media and communication, as well as policy-makers and practitioners working in related areas such as media education.

Book excerpt: "Given the increasing complexities of co-morbidities in women of childbearing age, this book provides a case study approach to several critical conditions which challenge all health care professionals working in this field. The case study approach will help midwives, doctors, midwifery and medical students to ground their clinical skills training on each specific situation by working through the questions and answer format. Of particular importance is the emphasis on inter-professional team working and the links between theory and practice." Dr. Rita Borg Xuereb, Head of Department of Midwifery, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Malta, Malta "The authors are to be commended as this is the first book of its kind and is well overdue ... The content is excellent, well referenced and covers all of the important issues ... The layout makes the book easy to read and the inclusion of pre-reading, self-assessment of knowledge and case studies engages the reader and stimulates further study into the pathophysiology and management of obstetric emergencies. I particularly liked the chapter on sepsis." Professor Christine Kettle, University Hospital of North Staffordshire & Staffordshire University, UK Part of a case book series, this book contains 14 common pregnancy and childbirth emergency scenarios to help prepare student midwives for life in practice. Each case explores and explains the pathology, pharmacology and care principles, and uses test questions and answers to help assess learning. The practical cases link theory to practice and their grounding in reality will really help bring midwifery to life. The book also: Covers the principles, pathology and skills involved in a range of birthing scenarios Acts as a useful aide memoire when simulating managing care procedures Demonstrates the importance of inter-professional team working in problem-solving Uses tables, diagrams and textboxes throughout, which act as a useful reference point Midwifery Practice is essential reading for student midwives, medical students and paramedics and a valuable resource for health professionals pursuing postgraduate studies in high dependency/ critical care. It is also beneficial to the facilitation of maternity based OSCEs. Contributors: Sam Bharmal, Susan Brydon, Margaret Ramsay, Jane Rutherford, Andrew Sim

Book excerpt: 'Doing everything admirably well matters very little if you can't finish the job.' Few people know better than Viswanathan Anand how to think strategically at lightning speed and work under immense pressure to overcome the toughest odds. From the time he learnt to move pieces on a chessboard as a six-year-old, Vishy - as Anand is fondly called - has racked up innumerable accolades. With five World Championship titles, he is a peerless ambassador of chess, and his is one of the most revered names in the sport. In Mind Master, Vishy looks back on a lifetime of games played, opponents tackled and circumstances overcome, and draws from its depths significant tools that will help every reader navigate life's challenges: What role do tactics and strategy play in the preparation for achieving a goal? How can emotions be harnessed to your advantage in tricky situations? What do you need to do to stay relevant in the face of rapidly changing realities? Is unlearning really the only way to learn? These are just some of the nuggets Vishy touches upon with characteristic wit, easy wisdom and disarming candour in this expanded edition of his critically acclaimed memoir, a delightful and invaluable exploration into the self that will thrill, inspire and motivate readers as few books have done before.
