Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Outlines of Rhetoric for Schools and Colleges Aristotle 1 regards Rhetoric as the Art of Persuasion Whately,2 as the Art of Conviction; Campbell,8 as the Art of Discourse. Campbell's definition is to be preferred as more comprehensive than either of the others, since it includes all forms of literary composition; but Aristotle justly emphasizes the most vital object of all Rhetorical study - which is: to move men to action, to accomplish some definite purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rhetoric a Text-Book, Designed for Use in Schools and Colleges, and for Private Study This work may be said to have grown, rather than to have been written for the purpose of making a book. Having used in the class-room, in academy and college, many of the text-books on Rhetoric, ah cient and modern, foreign and American, and having instructed some classes without using a text-book, I have been most satisfied with the result when the method herein presented has been pursued. This book is therefore the result of actual experiment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Writing & Rhetoric series method employs fluent reading, careful listening, models for imitation, and progressive steps. It assumes that students learn the best by reading excellent, whole-story examples of litereature and by growing their skills through imitatiion. Each excercise is intended to impart a skill (or tool) that can be employed in all kids of writing and speaking. The excercises are arranged from simple to more complex. What's more, the exercises are cumulative, meaning that later exercises incorporate the skills acquired preceding exercises. This series is a step-by-step apprenticeship in the art of writing and rhetoric. Fable, the first book in the Writing & Rhetoric series, teaches students the practice of close reading and comprehension, summarizing a story aloud and in writing, and amplification of a story through description and dialogue. Students learn how to identify different kinds of stories; determine the beginning, middle, and end of stories; recognize point of view; and see analogous situations, among other essential tools. The Writing & Rhetoric series recovers a proven method of teaching writing, using fables to teach beginning writers the craft of writing well.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Discourse: A Rhetoric for High Schools and Colleges Man continually speaks or writes, reads or gives audience. Rhetoric deals with all these universal and lifelong processes; hence, its practical importance is obvious and emphatic. This study, however, got its name from the one exercise of speaking - from the Greek rhetor, speaker - because, in the political life of the Greeks, so much depended on the art of public address. If this study should be named now, and after the most effective means of formal communication, the term would come from reading or writing; and it would not matter which, as each presupposes the other. But we care now nothing for the name except to insist, in obedience to the demands of both life and logic, on its extension over all phases of the discourse process. Until quite recently it has been customary to organize this subject under the literal meaning of the word, attaching it to the chair of oratory in college and confining its practical value to those engaged in public address. Thus, as with the Greeks and Romans, it became the hidden art of the few by which fickle masses were to be swayed. But now it is not so much the swaying of masses that is needed as masses who can critically estimate and appreciate the utterances of others. And these utterances are comparatively seldom made now in the form of public address, but in that of the book, the newspaper, and the magazine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English: Composition-Rhetoric-Literature The literature selections have been edited with the design not only of supplying necessary information but also of inducing the student to do his own thinking. There is at present far too much so-called appreciation and far too little real thought expended upon literature. In the prepara tion of the Exercises and of the Notes and Questions the authors have constantly borne in mind this supreme aim of education - the development of the ability to think. Teachers are therefore urged to require the students to write all the Exercises and to answer all the Questions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes for Teachers of English Composition (to Be Used in Connection With Elements of Rhetoric and English Composition, First High School Course) This pamphlet has two aims: (i) that of placing before the instructor certain hints as to method which could not appropriately be included in the pages of the text-book itself; and (2) that of gather ing together, for the sake of ready reference, typical answers to many of the questions asked in the exer cises. With regard to many of the answers much discretion is of course to be allowed. Those given in the following pages are, in cases where opinion and judgment play a part, simply those which seem to me typical, or which I should prefer in my own class-room. For assistance in the preparation of the pamphlet, my thanks are due to Miss Jeannette B. Gillespy, Assistant in English in Barnard College.
