Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Followers of the Pritiken Diet Program, and those not familiar with it, can learn how to eat in all kinds of restaurants and still follow Pritiken guidelines. The emphasis is on complex carbohydrates, low fat, low cholesterol, low sodium, and low in simple sugars. Restaurants that serve Pritiken meals are listed. Suggestions for successful dining out in any restaurant include: careful selection of the restaurant (call ahead to check on flexibility of chef), an assertive but realistic attitude, good communication with the waitperson, and proficiency in reading a menu "between the lines". This last skill, dubbed "menu literacy", is taught by offering pointers and providing sample menus for practice. General principles for ordering appropriate meals in various ethnic restaurants are described, and requests in six languages (Spanish, Chinese, French, Italian, Hebrew, and German) are included for "no oil, no salt, no sugar; especially no MSG. Assorted steamed vegetables, please. Thank you." One chapter contains suggestions for the restauranteurs who would like to offer Pritiken-type meals to his/her patrons, and includes an index to all Pritiken recipes listed in available books on the Pritiken program. Book excerpt: Travis A. Weisse tells a new history of modern diets in America that goes beyond the familiar narrative of the nation's collective failure to lose weight. By exploring how the popularity of diets grew alongside patients' frustrations with the limitations and failures of the American healthcare system in the face of chronic disease, Weisse argues that millions of Americans sought "fad" diets—such as the notorious Atkins program which ushered in the low-carbohydrate craze—to wrest control of their health from pessimistic doctors and lifelong pharmaceutical regimens. Drawing on novel archival sources and a wide variety of popular media, Weisse shows the lengths to which twentieth-century American dieters went to heal themselves outside the borders of orthodox medicine and the subsequent political and scientific backlash they received. Through colorful profiles of the leaders of four major diet movements, Health Freaks demonstrates that these diet gurus weren't shady snake oil salesmen preying on the vulnerable; rather, they were vocal champions for millions of frustrated Americans seeking longer, healthier lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans spend more than $500 billion a year eating out, and behind each burger, turkey sandwich, and ice cream sundae is a simple decision that could help you control your weight--and your life. The problem is, restaurant chains and food producers aren't interested in helping you make healthy choices. In fact, they invest $30 billion a year on advertising, much of it aimed at confusing eaters and disguising the fat and calorie counts of their products. Thankfully Eat This, Not That! Restaurant Survival Guide - by David Zinczenko with Matt Goulding - is here to help. It's the first book in the Eat This, Not That! series to focus solely on burger shacks, pizza parlors, pasta joints, breakfast diners, Mexican cantinas, Chinese eateries, drive-thrus, and coffee shops. With in-depth coverage of 80 of the biggest restaurant chains in the country, it arms you with the information you need to take control of your diet and sidestep the egregious calorie-landmines that are secretly sabotaging your chances of losing weight. And why would restaurants do such a thing? Because people keep buying. The top brass at any restaurant knows that the more food that goes onto the plate, the more drastically the customers will underestimate the caloric heft. That's why the average cheeseburger has 136 more calories today than it did in the 1970s and why two-thirds of the country is now overweight or obese. Additional features in Eat This, Not That! Restaurant Survival Guide include: · Restaurant Report Card: America's Best and Worst Restaurants · The Menu Decoder: rules for navigating any menu in the country · The Buffet Survival Guide · The New Rules of Eating Out · 50 Great Restaurant Meals under 500 Calories · Money- (and Calorie-) Saving Guide to Making Your Favorite Restaurant Meals—at Home! Loaded with tips on everything from navigating neighborhood restaurant menus to making smart choices in the drive-thru to cutting cash and calories at the country's largest chain restaurants, Eat This, Not That! Restaurant Survival Guide is the indispensable encyclopedia to the world of eating out.

Book excerpt: The Pritikin diet is a low-fat, high-fibre diet which forms part of the "Pritikin Program for Diet and Exercise", a lifestyle regimen originally created by Nathan Pritikin. The diet is based around low-fat, high-fibre food and limiting red meat, alcohol and processed food. When it was launched the diet was considered radical, but its precepts are now considered largely in alignment with mainstream nutritional advice. The Pritikin Diet has been categorized as a fad diet with possible disadvantages including a boring food choice, flatulence, and the risk of feeling too hungry.Gastroenterologist David Hershel Alpers and colleagues described the Pritikin diet as "nutritionally adequate, but the low fat content makes it unpalatable, and the likelihood of compliance is low".
