Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Coach-Maker's Magazine, Vol. 1: Devoted to the Literary, Social Mechanical Interests of the Craft; June, 1858 to May, 1859 No species of writing is more deeply interesting than that of history, and no composition is of greater inter est than that which records the history of a fellow-man. Should the subject of that histo be a member of our own craft, that circumstance adds ditional interest, and we are led instinctively to inquire: When and where was he born? What were his earlier tastes and predilections? W'hat were his earlier advantages of education? What his peculiar trait of character as manhood developed itself 1 etc., etc. All these questions, we affirm, are perfectly na tural, and oflen, when they are satisfactorily answered, we discover that, in this country, at least, our most distinguish ed men are those who, by untiring industry and an honor able course of life, have been the makers of their own fortunes. It is ver true there may be exceptions to this rule - some may Nave had fortunes thrust u on them but then they belong rather to the exception t an the rule. It has come to be the boasted peculiarity of our free institu tions, that all alike - the rich and the poor - may find an open door to the Temple of Fame and the magazines of wealth. This is unquestionan _ao in a qualified sense. Among the members of our own profession we know of none more deserving of a niche in our Portrait Gallery than Mr. James Brewster, of New Haven, Conn, not merely be cause he is one of the oldest living members of our frater nity, and has been one of its most successful business men, but because he has always shown a peculiar interest for the welfare of all with whom business has brought him in connection; but more of this hereafter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New York Coach Makers Magazine, Vol. 2: Devoted to the Literary, Social, and Mechanical Interests of the Craft; June, 1859, to May, 1860 The first volume of this work was commenced with less than one hundred and fifty subscribers, with the injurious effects upon the community of another's defalcations, and the hard times to battle with. These have now all been overcome, and the prospect is, that our third voyage will be over smoother seas. With the inducements we ofi'er - low rates of passage, good fare (properly inspected), and an agreeable crew, we feel persuaded that the companions of this trip will secure every berth (volume) we shall be able to provide for their accommodation. Under these convictions, we shall lay in an extra stock of food for the mind, that none may find occasion to charge us with having put them on a short allowance, through any neglect on our part. Trusting that we shall have the continued smiles of the craft upon our efi'orts, and promising that we will use our best endeavors to please, we are Yours faithfully. Book excerpt: Co-Winner of the 2005 Hagley Business History Book Prize given by the Busines History Conference. In 1926, the Carriage Builders' National Association met for the last time, signaling the automobile's final triumph over the horse-drawn carriage. Only a decade earlier, carriages and wagons were still a common sight on every Main Street in America. In the previous century, carriage-building had been one of the largest and most dynamic industries in the country. In this sweeping study of a forgotten trade, Thomas A. Kinney extends our understanding of nineteenth-century American industrialization far beyond the steel mill and railroad. The legendary Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company in 1880 produced a hundred wagons a day—one every six minutes. Across the country, smaller factories fashioned vast quantities of buggies, farm wagons, and luxury carriages. Today, if we think of carriage and wagon at all, we assume it merely foreshadowed the automobile industry. Yet., the carriage industry epitomized a batch-work approach to production that flourished for decades. Contradicting the model of industrial development in which hand tools, small firms, and individual craftsmanship simply gave way to mechanized factories, the carriage industry successfully employed small-scale business and manufacturing practices throughout its history. The Carriage Trade traces the rise and fall of this heterogeneous industry, from the pre-industrial shop system to the coming of the automobile, using as case studies Studebaker, the New York–based luxury carriage-maker Brewsters, and dozens of smallerfirms from around the country. Kinney also explores the experiences of the carriage and wagon worker over the life of the industry. Deeply researched and strikingly original, this study contributes a vivid chapter to the story of America's industrial revolution.
