Book excerpt: In the tradition of Quantum Healing and Guns, Germs and Steel, Philip Shepherd's New Self, New World makes an intellectual inquiry into how we might restore freedom, creativity, and a sense of presence in the moment by rejecting several fundamental myths about being human New Self, New World challenges the primary story of what it means to be human, the random and materialistic lifestyle that author Philip Shepherd calls our “shattered reality.” This reality encourages us to live in our heads, self-absorbed in our own anxieties. Drawing on diverse sources and inspiration, New Self, New World reveals that our state of head-consciousness falsely teaches us to see the body as something we possess and to try to take care of it without ever really learning how to inhabit it. Shepherd articulates his vision of a world in which each of us enjoys a direct, unmediated experience of being alive. He petitions against the futile pursuit of the “known self” and instead reveals the simple grace of just being present. In compelling prose, Shepherd asks us to surrender to the reality of “what is” that enables us to reunite with our own being. Each chapter is accompanied by exercises meant to bring Shepherd’s vision into daily life, what the author calls a practice that “facilitates the voluntary sabotage of long-standing patterns.” New Self, New World is at once a philosophical primer, a spiritual handbook, and a roaming inquiry into human history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two foundational thinkers in the history of psychoanalysis: Sigmund Freud and Heinz Kohut. Though Kohut is much less well known, he revolutionized psychoanalytic theory and the practice of psychotherapy. In a burst of creativity from the mid-1960s until his death in 1981, he reimagined the field in a way that made it open, mutual, relational, and inclusive. His conceptualization of a holistic self that is in an ongoing relationship with others represented a paradigm shift from the purely intrapsychic Freudian model of id/ego/superego. In The New World of Self, Charles B. Strozier, Konstantine Pinteris, Kathleen Kelley, and Deborah Cher draw upon their deep knowledge of Kohut's extensive and diverse writing to understand the full significance of his thinking. His self psychology released psychoanalysis from the inherent limits created by its theoretical dependence on drive theory. Kohut instead focused on immediate experience. He also embraced historical themes, leadership and culture, literature from Kafka to O'Neill, the psychology of music, much about art, and a theory of religion and spirituality for modern sensibilities. Acquainting the work of this eminent psychoanalytic theorist to a new generation of clinicians and scholars, The New World of Self unpacks the transformative research of Heinz Kohut and highlights his significance in the history of psychoanalysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heinz Kohut's work represents an important departure from the Freudian tradition of psychoanalysis. A founder of the Self Psychology movement in America, he based his practice on the belief that narcissistic vulnerabilities play a significant part in the suffering that brings people for treatment. Written predominantly for a psychoanalytic audience Kohut's work is often difficult to interpret. Siegel uses examples from his own practice to show how Kohut's innovative theories can be applied to other forms of treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The New World of Self traces Heinz Kohut's transformation of psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. His psychology of empathy introduced a new paradigm of self that provides an alternative to one based on the drives that Freud and ego psychology favored. The book closely examines Kohut's theoretical and clinical work in a series of chapters on empathy, the self, the selfobject, rage, self-state dreams, sexualization, the nature of healing in psychotherapy, the extension of self psychology to the humanities, and the spiritual dimension of Kohut's thinking. The book is the first such examination of all Kohut's work in the historical context of what preceded him and the approaches that have evolved in psychoanalysis as a direct result of his contributions. There are three objectives of the book worth noting. First, each thematic chapter stands alone and can be read separately to understand a given dimension of Kohut's thought. There is, however, a conceptual sequence in the book. The whole is larger than the sum of its parts. Kohut clarified for psychoanalysis the holistic nature of self, just as this book makes clear the totality of his theory. Second, the book relieves Kohut of his often dense language and makes him accessible to clinicians and scholars who have lost sight of his significance as the foundational thinker in psychoanalysis after Freud. Finally, all the clinical material illustrating Kohut's theories are from his own cases or of those he supervised. The book is the most complete, readable, and thorough introduction to Heinz Kohut available"--

Book excerpt: "We each embark on two life journeys - one out into the world, the other inward to the self. With these journeys in mind, the eminent anthropologist Keith Hart reflects on a life of learning, sharing and remembering to offer readers the means of connecting life's extremes - individual and society, local and global, personal and impersonal dimensions of existence and explores what it is that makes us fully human. As an anthropologist, amateur economist and globetrotter, he draws on the humanities, popular culture and his own experiences to help readers explore their own place in history"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revisiting African philosophy's classic questions, D. A. Masolo advances understandings of what it means to be human -- whether of African or other origin. Masolo reframes indigenous knowledge as diversity: How are we to understand the place and structure of consciousness? How does the everyday color the world we know? Where are the boundaries between self and other, universal and particular, and individual and community? From here, he takes a dramatic turn toward Africa's current political situation and considers why individual rights and freedoms have not been recognized, respected, demanded, or enforced. Masolo offers solutions for containing socially destructive conduct and antisocial tendencies by engaging community. His unique thinking about community and the role of the individual extends African philosophy in new, global directions.

Book excerpt: Self and World is an exploration of the nature of self-awareness. Quassim Cassam challenges the widespread and influential view that we cannot be introspectively aware of ourselves as objects in the world. In opposition to the views of many empiricist and idealist philosophers, including Hume, Kant, and Wittgenstein, he argues that the self is not systematically elusive from the perspective of self-consciousness, and that consciousness of our thoughts and experiences requires a sense of our thinking, experiencing selves as shaped, located, and solid physical objects in a world of such objects. Awareness of oneself as a physical object involves forms of bodily self-awareness whose importance has seldom been properly acknowledged in philosophical accounts of the self and self-awareness. The conception of self-awareness defended in this book helps to undermine the idealist thesis that the self does not belong to the world, and also the claim that the existence of subjects or persons is only a derivative feature of reality. In the final part of the book, Cassam argues that the existence of persons is a substantial fact about the world, and that it is not possible to give a complete description of reality without claiming that persons exist. This clear, original, and challenging treatment of one of the deepest of intellectual problems will demand the attention of all philosophers and cognitive scientists who are concerned with the self.
