Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The experience of growing in a relationship with God is very much like the experience of growing in any relationship. Over the centuries, many Saints have traveled this road, and more than a few have written of their experiences in the hope that doing so will help other Christians to better understand what they are experiencing as they come to know God more intimately. In 1911, Evelyn Underhill published a work titled Mysticism, in which she sought to examine the writings of many of the Saints on this topic so that she might come to discern the experiences that were common to each. Others have since built upon her work, and work on this subject matter is obviously ongoing, however the end result of this work as it exists today has been the coalescence of the experiences of many of the Saints into a chart that identifies the experiences common to each of the major seasons (or "Ways" as they are also commonly referred to) of Christian spiritual growth. This work will take a look at the seasons of spiritual growth, and how those seasons are reflected in the order of salvation. Much of what follows will be a bit academic in nature, as we work our way through concepts, theologies, and practices that lead to a deeply spiritual life. My intent in this work is to explain the process of spiritual growth in the context of the salvific experience within which it occurs. My hope is to offer entrance into a dialogue that I don't believe to be adequately engaged in the formation processes of clergy in most Christian denominations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is becoming clear that the church of the modern world is losing (or has already lost) its perceived value among the general populace. There have been many theories proposed that try to explain the reason for this decline in value, ranging from the church's need to be more relevant, to the necessity of return to authentic community. If the church is to become valuable again then we must return to a more substantive theology, one that helps people, both individually and collectively, to better understand Christian spiritual growth by explaining what the process of growing toward spiritual maturity has historically looked like. What the world needs is a church that is irrelevant...one that breaks the worldly cycles of selfishness, selfism, and entitlement and offers an alternative to the meaningless quest for self-deification. If we are to make a difference in the world again, then we must stop trying to make disciples who follow Christ, and begin making disciples who know Christ.

Book excerpt: "The Mystic Christ is an ancient tale of mystic union, salvation, and enlightenment. It is the careful uncovering of a lost treasure of immeasurable value, long buried in the suffocating darkness of conventional orthodoxy on one side, and blind fundamentalist extremism on the other. From the viewpoint of the world's mystical religious traditions, the brilliant light of the Master's way is revealed as a penetrating radical non-duality unifying all people and all of life. His path to this all-embracing unity is the spiritual practice of pure selfless love. Love God intensely, love our neighbor as our own Self, bless those that curse us, and pray for those that mistreat us. Love has been lost, becoming nothing more than a word in the dictionary and, yet, it remains the foundation of Jesus' message."

Book excerpt: This book challenges experiential, esoteric and colloquial understandings of mysticism by bringing a fresh relevance to the term through an interdisciplinary dialogue between literature, mysticism and theology in the context of postmodernity. In order to achieve this, the author takes selected writings of Iris Murdoch, Denise Levertov and Annie Dillard, and incorporates them into various stages of a redesigned mystic way. The fourteenth-century mystic Julian of Norwich is invoked throughout as a role model whom these three writers seek to emulate as popular writers, contemplatives and theologians. As theologians who are concerned with the pressing issues of our age, Grace Jantzen, Dorothee Soelle and Sallie McFague are drawn on as conversation partners to complete the three-way discussion. The author maintains that understanding the writing and reading of creative texts in the context of practical mysticism facilitates an integrated approach to the use of literature for theological expression.

Book excerpt: The Signature of Jesus challenges the gospel of "cheap grace" and calls the church to radical discipleship. With passion and boldness, author Brennan Manning invites readers to risk living life as Jesus lived—committed to simplicity, purity of heart, and obedience to the gospel. As a radical alternative this book is offered to Christians who want to live by faith and not by mere “religion,” for those who recognize that many of the burning theological issues in the church today are neither burning nor theological; who see Christianity neither as a moral code or a belief system but as a love affair; who have not forgotten that they are followers of a crucified Christ; who know that following him means living dangerously; who want to live the gospel without compromise; who have no greater desire than to have his signature written on the pages of their lives. “Behold,” Jesus proclaims, “I stand at the door and knock.” You may have already met him at the door…but do you truly know him? Have you been transformed by His furious, passionate, unexplainable love? Join Brennan Manning, the bestselling author of The Ragamuffin Gospel, on a personal journey to experience Christ’s love and live with His passion.

Book excerpt: In Wonderful and Dark Is This Road, Emilie Griffin invites us to discover the fascinating, yet often misunderstood, spiritual path of mysticism. Griffin explores the origins of mysticism, the different expressions and gifts of mysticism, and the recognized stages on the mystical journey. In beautifully transparent prose, she illuminates the insights of famous mystics throughout the centuries, from the Apostle Paul, to the Desert Fathers and Mothers, to Thomas Merton and Evelyn Underhill. Ultimately, and perhaps most importantly, Griffin reveals mysticism as a spiritual path that is open to us all, offering the gift of an intimate knowledge of divine love to those who choose it. This is a book that has the potential to transform not only our inner lives, but our world.
