Book excerpt: Finally, the answer to the many questions that have been preying on the minds of millions of Americans has arrived. Why are Americans so vulnerable to divisive political tactics? Why did Americans get dragged into such an unwise war in Iraq? Why do fundamentalist religious groups, Fox News, and right-wing radio still play such influential roles in America's political landscape? And why are long-accepted rational scientific ideas like evolution under siege? These questions hold America's future in the balance. Ultimately, they are questions about the American mind. Psychologist-attorney Dr. Bryant Welch has the answers. If America is going to change the mind-set that led us to war in Iraq and left us unable to confront our serious national problems, this book is vitally important. Drawing on his unique experience both as a clinical psychologist and a Washington, D.C., political figure with the American Psychological Association, Dr. Welch shows how the long-term effects of sophisticated new forms of political manipulation have not only led to our debacle in Iraq but are also currently undercutting America's ability to address its very serious problems. In the 1944 movie Gaslight, a husband drives his wife to the brink of insanity by playing games with her sense of reality. Just as in the movie, America's most recent political "gaslighters," such as George W. Bush, Karl Rove, Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and many religious leaders, have generated and exploited confusion in the minds of countless Americans. Gaslighters prey on their victim's vulnerability to paranoia, sexual perplexity, and envy to undermine the mind's ability to function rationally. Welch examines why millions of Americans, in response to such assaults, subconsciously and dangerously create their own simplistic reality, even if it is completely different from the more complex reality of the world. Most important, State of Confusion explains how and why Americans must act now to fight back against this harmful manipulation before it's too late. Dr. Welch's exploration of the American mind is both fascinating and frightening, and State of Confusion is a must-read for everyone who cares about the future of this great country.

Now, in this dazzling collection of nine entirely original essays, written with a rare combination of give and sharpness, wit and fearlessness, she delves into the forces that warp our vision, demonstrating an unparalleled stylistic potency and critical dexterity. Trick Mirror is an enlightening, unforgettable trip through the river of self-delusion that surges just beneath the surface of our lives. This is a book about the incentives that shape us, and about how hard it is to see ourselves clearly through a culture that revolves around the self. In each essay, Tolentino writes about a cultural prism: the rise of the nightmare social internet; the advent of scamming as the definitive millennial ethos; the literary heroine’s journey from brave to blank to bitter; the punitive dream of optimization, which insists that everything, including our bodies, should become more efficient and beautiful until we die. Gleaming with Tolentino’s sense of humor and capacity to elucidate the impossibly complex in an instant, and marked by her desire to treat the reader with profound honesty, Trick Mirror is an instant classic of the worst decade yet. Book excerpt: Essays on great figures and important issues, advances and blind alleys—from trepanation to the discovery of grandmother cells—in the history of brain sciences. Neuroscientist Charles Gross has been interested in the history of his field since his days as an undergraduate. A Hole in the Head is the second collection of essays in which he illuminates the study of the brain with fascinating episodes from the past. This volume's tales range from the history of trepanation (drilling a hole in the skull) to neurosurgery as painted by Hieronymus Bosch to the discovery that bats navigate using echolocation. The emphasis is on blind alleys and errors as well as triumphs and discoveries, with ancient practices connected to recent developments and controversies. Gross first reaches back into the beginnings of neuroscience, then takes up the interaction of art and neuroscience, exploring, among other things, Rembrandt's “Anatomy Lesson” paintings, and finally, examines discoveries by scientists whose work was scorned in their own time but proven correct in later eras.

Book excerpt: Omnibus: I love myself... and the feeling is mutual/God is confused, He thinks He's Pieter I love myself... and the feeling is mutual Pieter Overduin (Rotterdam, 1969) has suffered from manic-depression for over ten years now. During that time he has kept a diary, consisting of short fragments from his daily life. Probing, moving and at times hilariously funny, Mr Overduin writes about the first signs of the illness and the way he has dealt with it since then. He went through very difficult times for a considerable amount of time but after that he managed to pick himself up again. He also shows what effect the illness had on his family, how the medication affected him and how it enables him to lead an independent life. But without the support of the people closest to him, he would not have made it. God is confused, He thinks He's Pieter Spring, 2004. Pieter enters his publisher's office. 'I've got a new manuscript.' 'Oh no, Pieter, please tell me it's not about manic-depression again.' 'It is.' 'Then it must be very special.' 'It is.' 'In what way?' 'It includes personal accounts of people who are involved in my life.' 'About their feelings and thoughts during your manic episodes?' 'Exactly.' 'That must be very confronting!' 'It is. Why don't you read it and find out.' Again, Pieter Overduin has written a very interesting book. He describes how he suffered from a manic episode after the publication of his first book, in which he believed himself to be Gandhi and God, respectively. The personal accounts of his family, friends and former colleagues also show the other side, how a manic-depressive's illness affects the people closest to him. To them, it feels like a life sentence as well. Just like he did with his first book I love myself... and the feeling is mutual, Pieter has written a fascinating and valuable work. It's written from the heart and very funny.
