Book excerpt: Most people believe that humanity's survival is threatened by catastrophic overpopulation.Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the greatest threat to modern society--in North America, Japan, and Europe--is a global decline in birth rates combined with a massive tidal wave of retirees that will overwhelm our economies and social welfare systems. If nothing is done to stem this "gray tsunami," it could end civilization as we know it.However, bioscience is on the verge of providing a solution: groundbreaking life-extension research could help us be productive and self-sufficient for much longer... and live healthily to 100 years and beyond. Alzheimer's, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, liver fibrosis, arthritis, even wrinkles, may soon be problems of the past. We might even be able to reverse aging itself.

Book excerpt: We examine inferences about old age mortality that arise when researchers use survey data matched to death records. We show that even small rates of failure to match respondents can lead to substantial bias in the measurement of mortality rates at older ages. This type of measurement error is consequential for three strands in the demographic literature: (1) the deceleration in mortality rates at old ages, (2) the black-white mortality crossover, and (3) the relatively low rate of old age mortality among Hispanics-often called the "Hispanic paradox." Using the National Longitudinal Survey of Older Men (NLS-OM) matched to death records in both the U.S. Vital Statistics system and the Social Security Death Index, we demonstrate that even small rates of missing mortality matching plausibly lead to an appearance of mortality deceleration when none exists, and can generate a spurious black-white mortality crossover. We confirm these findings using data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) matched to the U.S. Vital Statistics system, a dataset known as the "gold standard" (Cowper et al., 2002) for estimating age-specific mortality. Moreover, with these data we show that the Hispanic paradox is also plausibly explained by a similar undercount.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nazi scientists started many experiments. One never ended. Roger Greene is a war hero. Raised in an orphanage, the only birthright he knows is the feeling that he was born to fly. Flying against the Axis Powers in World War II is everything he always dreamed—until the day he’s shot down and lands in the hands of the enemy. When Allied bombs destroy both his prison and the mad genius experimenting on POWs, Roger survives. Within hours, his wounds miraculously heal, thanks to those experiments. The Methuselah Project is a success—but this ace is still not free. Seventy years later, Roger hasn’t aged a day, but he has nearly gone insane. This isn’t Captain America—just a lousy existence only made passable by a newfound faith. The Bible provides the only reliable anchor for Roger’s sanity and his soul. When he finally escapes, there’s no angelic promise or personal prophecy of deliverance, just confusion. It’s 2015—and the world has become an unrecognizable place. Katherine Mueller—crack shot, genius, and real Southern Belle—offers to help him find his way home. Can he convince her of the truth of his crazy story? Can he continue to trust her when he finds out she works for the very organization he’s trying to flee? Thrown right into pulse-pounding action from the first page, readers will find themselves transported back in time to a believable, full-colored past, and then catapulted into the present once more. The historical back-and-forth adds a constantly moving element of suspense to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methuselah Flies presents a trailblazing project on the biology of aging. It describes research on the first organisms to have their lifespan increased, and their aging slowed, by hereditary manipulation. These organisms are fruit flies from the species Drosophila melanogaster, the great workhorse of genetics. Michael Rose and his colleagues have been able to double the lifespan of these insects, and improved their health in numerous respects as well. The study of these flies with postponed aging is one of the best means we have of understanding, and ultimately achieving, the postponement of aging in humans. As such, the carefully presented detail of this book will be of value to research devoted to the understanding and control of aging.Methuselah Flies: ? is a tightly edited distillation of twenty years of work by many scientists? contains the original publications regarding the longer-lived fruit flies? offers commentaries on each of the topics covered ? new, short essays that put the individual research papers in a wider context? gives full access to the original data ? captures the scientific significance of postponed aging for a wide academic audienc

Book excerpt: " Many medical authorities predict that average life expectancy could well exceed 100 years by mid century and rise even higher soon thereafter. This astonishing prospect, brought on by the revolution in molecular biology and information technology, confronts policymakers and public health officials with a host of new questions. How will increased longevity affect local and global demographic trends, government taxation and spending, health care, the workplace, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid? What ethical and quality-of-life issues are raised by these new breakthroughs? In Coping with Methuselah, a group of practicing scientists and public policy experts come together to address the problems, challenges, and opportunities posed by a longer life span. This book will generate discussion in political, social, and medical circles and help prepare us for the extraordinary possibilities that the future may hold. "

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides concrete scientific basis that we can conceive the possibility of modifying or even completely canceling aging process, despite the fact that aging is commonly regarded as the result of the overall effects of many uncontrollable degenerative phenomena. The authors illustrate in detail the mechanisms by which cells and the whole organism age. Actions by which it is possible, or will be possible within a limited time, to operate for modifying aging are also debated. The discussion is conducted within the frame and the concepts of evolutionary medicine, which is also indispensable for distinguishing between the manifestations of aging and: (i) diseases that worsen with age, and (ii) acceleration of normal aging rates, caused by unhealthy lifestyle habits and other avoidable factors. The book also discusses the impact of aging on overall mortality and the strange situation that, according to official statistics, aging does not exist as cause of death. This book is a turning point between a gerontology and geriatrics conceived as the study and vain treatment of an incurable condition and one in which these disciplines examine the how and why of a physiological phenomenon that can be modified up to a possible total control. This means transforming the medical prevention and treatment of physiological aging from the greatest failure to the greatest success of medicine.

Book excerpt: You do not want to be another Methuselah, the oldest man in history, who lived an impressive 969 years; that teaches us the importance of not living long for nothing because we can remember him for nothing more prominent than the massive number of years he lived for. Living a life of impact is the responsibility of those who wish to make a significant difference in the world. This involves creating value, solving problems, influencing others, and leaving a lasting legacy. Impact is the measure of the influence one's actions, choices, or presence has on others and the world around them. It goes beyond superficial achievements and focuses on creating meaningful change, whether in individuals' lives, communities or on a global scale. It gives our lives purpose and fulfilment, knowing that we have made a difference in the lives of others. The impact is not something that happens by chance or accident but is a result of deliberate and purposeful efforts to create meaningful change. It is not limited to grand gestures or large-scale initiatives; even small actions can have a ripple effect and make a significant difference in someone's life or society as a whole. Ultimately, the impact is about leaving a lasting legacy and inspiring others to follow in your footsteps. Impact matters because it allows us to make a positive difference in the world, address societal issues, and improve the lives of others. It provides a sense of purpose and fulfilment, inspiring others to take action and creating a ripple effect. Impact also affects happiness, fulfilment, and legacy. Happiness is a state of being satisfied and content with life. At the same time, fulfilment is a state of being satisfied and content with work. Impact increases fulfilment by providing a sense of purpose, aligning work with values, motivating goals, rewarding individuals, and creating opportunities for learning and improvement. Legacy is the state of being remembered and respected by others after death. Impact can increase it by providing significance and influence, affecting lives and the world positively, inspiring others, creating value, and leaving a lasting legacy. The impact can be achieved in various domains and contexts. It can be achieved by anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or background.
