At times considered one of Shakespeare’s weaker plays, it is often dismissed or marginalized; however, developments in feminist, ecocritical and new historicist criticism have opened up new perspectives and this collection of 18 essays by top Shakespeare scholars sheds fresh light on the play. The detailed introduction by Phyllis Rackin and Evelyn Gajowski provides a historical survey of the play and ties into an evolving critical and cultural context. The book’s sections look in turn at female community/female agency; theatrical alternatives; social and theatrical contexts; desire/sexuality; nature and performance to provide a contemporary critical analysis of the play.

Book excerpt: The Merry Wives of Windsor or Sir John Falstaff and the Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy by William Shakespeare first published in 1602, though believed to have been written in or before 1597. The Windsor of the play's title is a reference to the town of Windsor, also the location of Windsor Castle, in Berkshire, England. Though nominally set in the reign of Henry IV or early in the reign of Henry V, the play makes no pretence to exist outside contemporary Elizabethan era English middle class life. It features the character Sir John Falstaff, the fat knight who had previously been featured in Henry IV, Part 1 and Part 2. It has been adapted for the opera at least ten times. The play is one of Shakespeare's lesser-regarded works among literary critics. Tradition has it that The Merry Wives of Windsor was written at the request of Queen Elizabeth I. After watching Henry IV Part I she asked Shakespeare to write a play showing Falstaff in love.

His men rob and plunder the citizens of Windsor, but he himself is seldom taken or convicted for his crimes. His fortunes at low ebb, he hits upon a plan to remedy that situation. He meets Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, two good ladies who hold the purse strings in their respective houses. Falstaff writes identical letters to the two good ladies, letters protesting undying love for each of them. The daughter of one of the ladies, Anne Page, is the center of a love triangle. Her father wishes her to marry Slender, a foolish gentleman who does not love her or anyone else, but who will marry any girl recommended to him by his cousin, the justice. Mistress Page, on the other hand, wants her daughter married to Doctor Caius, a French physician then in Windsor. Anne herself loves Fenton, a fine young gentleman deeply in love with her. All three lovers pay the doctor's housekeeper, Mistress Quickly, to plead their cause with Anne, for Mistress Quickly convinces each that she alone can persuade Anne to answer yes to a proposal. Mistress Quickly is, in fact, second only to Falstaff in her plotting and her trickery.

Book excerpt: The Merry Wives of Windsor is a comedy written through William Shakespeare which way of life dictates changed into composed at the request of Queen Elizabeth I. The play premiered in 1597 with eBook happening in 1602. Was it no longer for the arrival of King Henry IV, Part I and the introduction of arguably the maximum beloved comic man or woman in Shakespearean history, there would be no Merry Wives of Windsor? At least now not inside the condition wherein it now exists. And there may be the rub. Like such a lot of others considering the fact that, Queen Elizabeth I become enthralled via creation of Sir John Falstaff-tutor to Prince Hall and the anti-Hotspur of the sooner ancient drama. Falstaff's large-than-lifestyles frame and spirit infuses that play with lots-wanted doses of humor as a way of undoing the capacity for Hotspur to overshadow as Hal as its hero. In comparison of Prince Hal, Hotspur seems quite simply the formidable and rightful inheritor to the throne; in evaluation to Falstaff, Hotspur appears a touch too giddily bloodthirsty. Falstaff have become so famous that an outstanding many other except the Queen desired to look him in a straight-up comedy.Unfortunately, many scholars and educational factor to the reality that the Falstaff in The Merry Wives of Windsor does no longer appear to be quite the same flamboyant, crafty, and totally enticing fellow inhabits the arena of courtly intrigue. As a result, though not relegated to the arena of rarely being produced like The Two Gentlemen of Verona, this play is nowhere near being accomplished as routinely as Henry IV, Part I or maybe its sequel, for that count number. Indeed, the prequel to those performs is today usually taken into consideration maximum critical in the Shakespeare canon for being the muse of Verdi's opera, Falstaff.
