It is thus that star-clusters are destroyed by the Architects of the visible Universe, but to be rebuild and fashioned into new Worlds. The matter within our Solar system is in an entirely different state from that which is outside or beyond the system. Since the three dimensions (length-breadth-thickness) belong only to one characteristic of matter, i.e., extension, common sense justly rebels against the suggestion that there can be more than three. The Septenary Constitution of Space will become visible when the so-called “fourth dimension of space,” i.e., the Sixth characteristic of matter and harbinger of the Sixth Sense, is fully awakened. The turn of a four-dimensional plane of the world (the realm of atoms) is near, but till then the puzzle of the astronomer will continue until his concepts reach the natural dimensions of visible invisible space in its septenary completeness. Gravity is an obsolete law in starry heaven. Among the materialists, gravity is the summit of the all-potent imponderables. But among the students of the Sacred Science, gravity in one of the attributes of differentiation manifested as the Law of Attraction and Repulsion between various states of matter. The arrangement of the nebulae suggests that some other force than gravitation was the active agent. The Solar System is as much the Microcosm of One Macrocosm, as man is the former when compared with his own little solar cosmos.

Aditi is the original of Sephirah, and the Prajāpatis are the elder brothers of the Sephirah. The Aum of the Hindus had become Aιών with the Greeks, and Aevum with the Romans — the Pan or All. There is but one Law, one Principle, one Agent, one Truth, one Word. Athenians, the real barbarians of Hellas, charged Æschylus with sacrilege and condemned him to be stoned to death because, they claimed, having been uninitiated, he had profaned the Mysteries by exposing them in his trilogies on a public stage. Every god and hero in ancient Pantheons has three biographies, running parallel with each other, and each connected with one of the aspects of the hero — historical, astronomical, and mythical. Localities are also made to correspond with astronomical and even with psychic events. History was thus made captive by ancient Mystery, to become later the great Sphinx of our times. The prototypes of nearly all the biblical personages can be found in the Ancient Pantheon of India. It is the “Sons of Light,” who gave birth to the “Sons of Earth,” the Patriarchs. The Old Testament was milked out of the most ingenious brains of Hebrew Kabbalists, partly in Egypt and partly in Babylonia. The connecting link between Abraham and Enoch’s Taro. Astronomically, Abraham is the sun-measure and a portion of the sun, while Enoch is the solar year, as much as are Hermes or Thoth. Numerically, Thoth is the equivalent of Moses or Hermes, the lord of the lower realms, also esteemed as a teacher of wisdom. The Zohar teaches practical Occultism more than any other work on that subject, not as it is translated and commented upon by its various critics, but with the secret signs on its margins. The “Wheel” of Enoch was the first attempt at symbology, invented in humanity’s Third Root-Race (Lemurian). There are two taros: the “Wheel” of Enoch, purely Esoteric, and the Western Kabbalistical tarot remodelled by Semites, a branch so much younger than the Aryans and even the Hamites.

Most of the credit - or blame - for the victory of naturalism has generally gone to Charles Darwin and the biologists who formulated theories of organic evolution. Darwinism undoubtedly played the major role, but the supporting parts played by naturalistic cosmogonies should also be acknowledged. Chief among these was the nebular hypothesis proposed by Pierre Simon Laplace in 1796, which explained the origin of the solar system as a natural development over extended periods of time. Ronald Numbers focuses on Laplace's theory as it affected American scientific thought. he first traces the history of Laplace's cosmogony chronologically, from its European inception to its demise about 1900. the last three chapters explore some of the theological and scientific consequences resulting from the acceptance of this cosmogony. Most significant was the change in the status of supernatural doctrine. When the nebular hypothesis lost credence at the end of the nineteenth century, those who had before tried to accommodate natural theory with supernatural doctrine no longer felt compelled to do so when faced with succeeding theories. The nebular hypothesis, it seems, had established natural law in the heavens.

The present study is an attempt to review – with more details – the major physical theories of comets in the past two millennia, from Aristotle to Whipple. My research, however, did not begin with antiquity. The basic question from which this project originated was a simple inquiry about the cosmic identity of comets at the dawn of the astronomical revolution: how did natural philosophers and astronomers define the nature and place of a new category of celestial objects – comets – after Brahe’s estimation of cometary distances? It was from this turning point in the history of cometary theories that I expanded my studies in both the pre-modern and modern eras. A study starting merely from Brahe and ending with Newton, without covering classical and medieval thought about comets, would be incomplete and leave the fascinating achievements of post-Newtonian cometology unexplored.
