Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique look into the minds and creative processes of contemporary Irish women poets, this book focuses on the transformation of their life experiences into poetry that blends personal identity with national identiry. It assembles many voices around common themes that are emerging to change Irish poetry permanently. Patricia Boyle Haberstroh, whose book Women Creating Women: Contemporary Irish Women Poets was a Choice Outstanding Academic book in 1996, shows in this new work how nine of the most prolific Irish women writers generate their poetry, broadening our understanding of the context of the poems. She pairs each author's verse with a companion (and often autobiographical) prose piece to illuminate the ways in which the poetry expresses the poet's personal experience. As women in a politically and religiously charged, male-dominated genre and country, these poets feel compelled to transcend daily life by articulating against the "norm." In this book, they describe the issues they confronted in their growth as poets and the strategies they developed to translate life into art. In linking these poets—drawn from Northern Ireland and England as well as the Republic of Ireland—Haberstroh throws into relief the characteristics that define their unique, individual subjects, themes, and styles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ariosto's correspondence paints a detailed portrait of the world he lived and wrote in. While some letters illuminate his day-to-day life, including his work as a provincial commissioner for the ruling Este family of Ferrara, others shed light on the composition and production of his poems and plays, allowing a glimpse of the man in his creative workshop. Herbal Doctor, a parody of humanism in general and neoplatonic philosophy in particular, may mark a defense of Ariosto's decision to turn away from the philological world of his contemporaries in order to pursue a different kind of learning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In March of 2020, the world was turned upside-down with the rampant COVID-19 pandemic that seemed to spread like wildfire in a matter of days and weeks. As an instrument of protection against the virus, facial coverings including NIOSH N95 facepieces, quickly became a hot commodity. As factual information about COVID was made hard to ascertain, facial masks were selling out in every drug store as well as online, becoming an immediate necessity to function in the world. At about the same time, artist Terry Hardy started chronicling the daily masks people were donning in order to deal with the world outside of their house. The mask was the perfect object, as it would come to represent the evolving and disturbing contractions of our times: fear and safety, comfort and division, left and right. Following a co-worker's diagnosis, Hardy himself tested positive for the virus. Though asymptomatic, the horrific stories that were continuously reported about people not coming out of the hospitals alive while refrigerator trucks were lined up outside medical centers as makeshift morgues to deal with the overflow added to his anxiety about the situation. The Daily COVID-19 Mask Drawings was Hardy's quarantine project that documented the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic where he obsessed daily on an object that became controversial, unobtainable, and sacred. On July 10, 2020, Hardy received an email informing him that he had tested non-detectable for the virus, his sign to stop the drawings. The Daily COVID-19 Mask Drawings is a powerful visual representation of what the world has gone through in the middle of a worldwide medical crisis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on images of disguise in literature, theater, and opera, this short-story cycle explores themes of identity and subterfuge in a fictional fugue that ranges from comic to poignant. Into the librettos of Don Giovanni, Tosca, Rigoletto, and other operas, Green weaves the authentic biographies of their singers and composers, modern-day settings, and his own imaginative twists. Throughout Voices in a Mask, characters obscure and reveal themselves as art mimics life and life, art. Ultimately the very acts of masking and projecting reveal a truth about the power of art and its inherent deceptions.
