Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan and Frank Black provide you with their discovery about teaching English as a second language in China - mainly that communism is alive and well structured in the classroom and that's a good thing. Classroom structure is something that anyone planning to teach in China, and everyone who is already doing it, should know about. Even the best designed lesson plan will not play if your students are not recognized for who they are: duty-driven, study-driven citizens of their Motherland. Another critical fact revealed is contained in the chapter: 'Who's Who in the Chinese Classroom?'. You will learn the truth about the classroom Monitor and about his or her duty to serve you, the Foreign Expert. There are many students ready to assist you in the classroom and this book reveals who they are and how they can be of help to you. The chapter on 'Teaching Group Work in China' lays out a first-of-its-kind real-life lesson plan for both skeptics and adventurous types. All the characters in this book are real, and any resemblance to real persons, living or dead is not coincidental. You will meet 'Midnight Runners' who sneak off into the night and Chinese English teachers who wish they could. You'll meet students who have a profound feeling of duty to their teachers and other students who don't. You will discover what some students believe about learning English as a second language and how their motives can help you facilitate a great class. The Little Red Book Teaching ESL in China is your official guide.

Book excerpt: Newly arrived Chinese immigrant students face the hardest imaginable situation in the classroom: most often, this is the only place where they can listen to and practice English, having little if any opportunity to do so at home. The burden is then on the teacher to further these students' English education and at the same time create a classroom environment that appreciates and respects their culture and language. Danling Fu has experienced these difficulties firsthand as a teacher, as a student, and as a parent. In An Island of English, she brings together her extensive research in New York's Chinatown, where she worked as a literacy consultant at the Dr. Sun Yat Sen Middle School, her personal story as an immigrant, and the stories of her son as an immigrant student. She extends her findings to other immigrant populations and applies her keen research talents to devise practical recommendations for educators and policymakers.

Book excerpt: This collection of nine Fulbright educators’ narrative accounts examines how these scholars navigated their teaching responsibilities with students, time with fellow colleagues, and cultural expectations in China, ranging from experience in teaching arts and government to questions of religion, emotional literacy, and urban infrastructure. With these contributions, authors analyze their own expectations against their actual experiences in order to offer insights for scholars and students of study abroad programming. As a roadmap for negotiating China’s higher education network and for taking advantage of any cross-cultural educational environment, this book highlights the type of fruitful educational programming that can come from cultural, historical, economic, and political difference.

Book excerpt: Mao Zedong's Little Red Book (Quotations from Chairman Mao) - a compilation of the Chinese leader's speeches and writings - is one of the most visible and ubiquitous symbols of twentieth-century radicalism. Published for the first time in 1964, it rapidly became the must-have accessory for Red Guards and revolutionaries from Berkeley to Bamako. Yet, despite its worldwide circulation and enduring presence there has, until now, been no serious scholarly effort to understand this seminal text as a global historical phenomenon. Mao's Little Red Book brings together a range of innovative scholars from around the world to explore the fascinating variety of uses and forms that Mao's Quotations has taken, from rhetoric, art and song, to talisman, badge, and weapon. The authors of this pioneering volume use Mao's Quotations as a medium through which to re-examine the history of the twentieth-century world, challenging established ideas about the book to reveal its remarkable global impact.

The initial publication covered 23 topics with 200 selected quotations by the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, and was entitled 200 Quotations from Chairman Mao. It was first given to delegates of a conference on 5 January 1964 who were asked to comment on it.
