This updated, first English edition makes Vinay & Darbelnet's classic methodology of translation available to a wider readership. The translation-oriented contrastive grammatical and stylistic analyses of the two languages are extensively exemplified by expressions, phrases and texts. Combining description with methodological guidelines for translation, this volume serves both as a course book and through its detailed index and glossary as a reference manual for specific translation problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1992, Political Stylistics draws together ideas about society and language from a range of theorists including Pratt, Bourdieu, Goody and Watt, and Bakhtin, to establish a political stylistics: a way of studying the formal properties of texts based on the principle that all linguistic production operates within the intricate network of power relations that structure the social realm. On a practical level, this methodology is used to analyse the representation of popular French and argot in three literary works where it extends beyond the speech of the characters and enters the narrative. The book is articulated along three axes: the trajectory of the French working class from mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century; the trajectory of popular language from social margin to literary centre; and the evolution of the novel from naturalism to modernism, to post-modernism. This book will be of interest to students of literature, linguistics, literary theory, and cultural studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature Through Art: A New Approach to French Literature To the literary historian, a history of French literature in which art is used as the key to a better and deeper understanding of literature will be of primary concern. The art historian, on the other hand, will take the 0p posite view wishing to see art elucidated by other forms of expression. To us the paramount problem is the comparative analysis and appreciation of texts and pictures in their details. For this purpose the historian must also be a philologist and a critic, i.e. One who can analyze both texts and pictures with correctness and taste. Therefore philologist and critic must be under stood here in a double sense; first, factually, in regard to interpretation and iconography and second, formally, in regard to stylistics and formal de scription. From a methodological point of view, philology is involved in yet an other sense. It is gratifying to see that the text-bound analytical, and stylistic method in literary history as used here, and as Opposed to the traditionally vague, synthetic, and persuasive method, finds even on the non-compara tive level enthusiastic support from the analysts of literary style. It is they who have called for a change in the way of literary history. The method of explication de textes has been used for some years for historical purposes in the sense that the new literary history in the making is considered to be composed of single layers of interpreted texts as encountered in successive epochs. It is this method that is used here on a comparative basis, the ex plications de textes having been supplemented by the explications de tableaux. Book excerpt: This book examines chronologically the development of French prose style from the twelfth century to present day, seeking to demonstrate the vast range of stylistic choices available to the writer of French prose, and to give readers a deeper understanding of the texts. The book is divided into sections dealing with periods (not always centuries) when it is possible to identify clear linguistic and stylistic shifts. It deals with the state of the language at that time, the development of vocabulary and grammar. Chosen passages of text either typify the period or reveal a stylistic innovation, and are also chosen for their intrinsic interest as well. Analysis often reveals unexpected subtextual meanings. Despite its undoubted scholarly basis, the book is intended to be eminently readable and entertaining. By giving an understanding of the connotative value of various stylistic devices, it should improve writers' ability to produce more authentic French prose by giving them a well-organized framework in which to judge the appropriateness of lexical choices and grammatical and syntactical structures.

Book excerpt: "The Shaping of Text pays homage to the work of the late John Porter Houston, who wrote extensively on style, rhetoric, and narrative and poetic techniques in Western European literature. It is appropriate that the essays in this volume focus on the form of the literary work and the ways in which form determines meaning." "William Calin's essay on the saint's life analyzes the use of antithesis as a poetic and structural device that illustrates the saint's fundamental understanding of the relationship between the ephemeral reality of his physical existence and the absolute, timeless reality to which he aspires. Raymond LaCharite's study of Rabelais focuses on the author's self-conscious awareness of this relationship and of Renaissance preoccupation with reading as both an act of creation and interpretation. George Joseph's study of three Renaissance poets focuses on the use of paradox as both a figure of speech and as a genre that serves both as a structure and as a basis for the interaction in the poetry. David Rubin's essay on La Fontaine emphasizes the ways in which the register of style in the Fables is used to set the tone and control the meaning of the language." "In the chapters devoted to nineteenth- and twentieth-century literature one can see the continuing closer relationship between the book as a work of art and the reality in which it interacts. Suzanne Nash analyzes the strategy Mme. de Stael uses in writing De l'Allemagne, a book written less to present an accurate portrayal of Germany than to promote her own republican ideals for France. Ross Chambers's essay probes the question of the theme of melancholy in Romantic writing and its relationship to the social and political structures of the period; Edward Kaplan shows how a growing ethical, social concern can be seen in Baudelaire's revised Les Fleurs du Mal; Rima Reck and Edward Kaplan reflect the growing use of literature as a vehicle for influencing public opinion." "Stirling Haig analyzes Flaubert's careful use of style and his awareness that reality is ultimately shaped by the beholder's perspective. Finnally, Virginia La Charite's chapter on Proust returns to the idea of a structure within a structure, in this case the architecture of the cathedral as a metaphor of synthesis, an aesthetic device that gives an intelligible structure to Proust's enormous but intricately complex, mass of details." "If John Porter Houston focused on form and style, it is because he understood the semiotic nature of all things: that a writer's style is a subtle form of refined communication or, as Houston wrote, "style is an absolute manner of seeing things for Proust, a question of vision, and so constitutes the ultimate reality of literature.""--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1969, Professor Hough’s work examines stylistics – the bridge between linguistics and literary criticism. The book gives a short survey of stylistics from a literary point of view, and tries to answer the question of how much stylistics contributes to the understanding of literature. It brings together continental European work on stylistics and Anglo-American critical writing which has a similar purpose though usually under a different name. In calling the attention of the student of literature to trains of thought with which he is not generally familiar, and with detailed analysis on different literary styles and methods, Professor Hough provides important critical insights.
