Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1883. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XII. AT THE MARRIAGE IN CANA. JESUS' journey took Him to the little town of Cana.1 What was it that led Him there? Even apart from the extreme improbability of such an invitation having followed Him into the wilderness or to the Jordan, the statement in the text, which indubitably declares that He was not invited until He appeared there (John ii. 2), precludes the possibility of His having been bidden to the wedding. But His going to Nazareth and there receiving the invitation, or thence following His mother to Cana, are pure inventions. It is further to be said, that when, after an absence of six months, Jesus returned to His native province from the south, He proceeded at once to Cana (iv. 46). It is there we find His mother at a wedding in what apparently is an intimately related family (ii. 1); and still more noticeable is the after account of Jesus' proceeding to Capernaum, along with His mother and the brethren (ii. 12), although it is not said of the brothers that the marriage was the reason of their being there. It may be inferred with great likelihood from this, that Mary had removed to Cana after the death of her husband; indeed, this is confirmed by a remark made by the inhabitants of Nazareth, quoted by Mark, to the effect that of the family only the sisters--who had probably married there--now dwelt in their original home (Mark vi. 3). It was therefore to His present home that Jesus went on His return to Galilee. 1 Wc have here another of those recollections in detail which testify indubitably to the historical character of the Fourth Gospel. This name occurs nowhere in the older tradition, but John knows the place so exactly that he distinguishes it--the Galilean Cana--from another locality of the same name, which, though belonging o...

Book excerpt: 2022 Catholic Media Association first place award in backlist beauty The Vita Christi of Ludolph of Saxony, fourteenth-century Carthusian, is the most comprehensive series of meditations on the life of Christ from the late Middle Ages. Ludolph assembles a wealth of commentary from the fathers of the church and the great medieval spiritual writers and weaves them into a seamless exposition of the Gospel. This is the full English translation of this classic work, and, while it will be of great interest to students of Christian spirituality, it is intended for ordinary believers seeking to enter more deeply into the meaning of the life of Christ. Ludolph divided his work into two parts; the present volume contains the first half of Part Two.

Book excerpt: Widely proclaimed a classic work of Christian faith, Life of Christ has been hailed as the most eloquent of Fulton J. Sheen's many books. The fruit of many years of reflection, prayer, and research, it is a dramatic and moving recounting of the birth, life, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Christ, and a passionate portrait of the God-Man, the teacher, the healer, and, most of all, the Savior, whose promise has sustained humanity for two millenia. With his customary insight and reverence, Sheen interprets the Scripture and describes Christ not only in historical perspective but also in exciting and contemporary terms -- seeing in Christ's life both modern parallels and timeless lessons. His thoughtful, probing analysis provides new insight into well-known Gospel events. An appealing blend of philosophy, history, and biblical exegesis, from the best-known and most-loved American Catholic leader of the twentieth century, Life of Christ has long been a source of inspiration and guidance. For those seeking to better understand the message of Jesus Christ, this vivid retelling of the greatest story ever lived is a must-read.

Book excerpt: We tend to look to the New Testament to tell us about Jesus, yet it was the Old Testament about which Jesus said, “the Scriptures point to me!” In The One Year Book of Discovering Jesus in the Old Testament, Bible teacher Nancy Guthrie takes readers from Genesis through Malachi, shining the light of Christ on the promise of a descendent who will put an end to the curse of sin; the story of a father who offers up his son as a sacrifice; the symbol of a temple where people can meet with God; the prophecy of a servant who will suffer; the person of a king who will rule with righteousness—and so much more. Day by day throughout the year, readers will see the beauty of Christ in fresh new ways, creating a deeper understanding and appreciation for who Jesus is and what he accomplished through his Cross and Resurrection.
