Book excerpt: "These short and elegant meditations on an often overlooked part of the New Testament by a first rate scholar priest offer much food for thought as we try to relate the Bible to our own often troubled world. Drawing on an extensive pastoral ministry as well as modern scholarship, Fr. Huffstetler succeeds in offering comfort, challenge and resources for the Christian life." -Mark D. Chapman, Professor of the History of Modern Theology, University of Oxford "Accessible, gracefully provocative and drenched in the reckless mercy of God, these meditations help us imagine what a true ambassador for Jesus Christ might say and do, how they might listen and how they might love." -Mark Oakley, Dean, St. John's College, University of Cambridge "...Brief...insightful meditations that exemplify the irresistible appeal of Scripture as believers and their communities deal with life's crises." -from the Foreword by Carl R. Holladay "Practical Faith and Active Love: Meditations on the Epistle of James is a 'game plan for life.'" -Joan Cronan, Athletic Director Emeritus, University of Tennessee

Book excerpt: Too often Christmas gets swallowed up in the busyness of shopping and sending cards and wrapping presents. As we rush around, we often miss the wonder of what Christmas is all about. Christmas began with a gift given to the human race two thousand years ago. It was a child, born in a Bethlehem stable and laid in a manger. His birth was announced by wise men guided from the East by a very special star. It was the gift we needed most: a Savior, the Holy Son of God. This is the good news proclaimed by the angel: "Fear not; for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord" (Luke 2:10-11). Why was God's gift of a Savior so important? There are three reasons: The greatness of the need. The future of the human race was at stake. Sin made havoc of God's creation and brought estrangement from its Creator. The greatness of the gift. Not only was the need great, but the gift was also great! "This is My beloved Son," God said, "in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). The greatness of the cost. Read the inspired portraits of the suffering of Christ in Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, and Psalm 69. The cross was only part of the price He gladly paid. Jesus Christ did not die for His own sins or because He was a victim of circumstances. He came, as God's supreme gift to you and me. The Bible pointedly asks: "How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?" (Hebrews 2:3). Have you overlooked the really important gift of Christmas? Is God prompting you to look through the odds and ends of Christmas? God's gift for you is waiting. Don't miss it. Right now, wherever you are, you can receive the costliest gift, Jesus Christ the Savior. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout this century the Letter of James has been viewed consistently as a disjointed set of instructions. Father Hartin deviates radically from this approach. He shows that the "call for perfection" provides a unifying meaning for the letter. Examining the concept of perfection against the background of the Greco-Roman world, the Old Testament, and the Septuagint, the author shows that perfection provides a key to define the spirituality of the Letter of James. It offers an understanding of God and of the way one is called "to be in the world." Hartin adopts a fresh approach toward understanding the categories of wisdom, eschatology, and apocalyptic as they illuminate the letter's advice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books in the New Testament are better known or more often quoted as the Letter of James. Because James is so concise, so intensely practical, and so filled with memorable metaphors and illustrations, it has become one of the two or three most popular New Testament books in the church. This highly original commentary seeks to make the Letter of James clear and applicable to Christian living today. Interacting with the latest views on James but keeping academic references to a minimum, Douglas Moo first introduces the Letter of James in its historical context and then provides verse-by-verse comments that explain the message of James both to its first readers and to today's church.

Book excerpt: Dr. J. Vernon McGee turns to the Epistle of James to present very practical lessons on Christian living. The subject of James is faith. The Epistle of James "pinches," says Dr. McGee. It "hurts you because he gets right down to where we are living-or, more accurately, to where we're not living." He challenges believers to a faith that works and walks in shoe leather. Because James emphasizes the ethics of the Christian faith, Dr. McGee uses the metaphor of "God's University." When life presents us with "quizzes" or "tests," Dr. McGee explains, the believer need not worry because James has provided us not only with the test questions, but also the answers. Chapters cover such relevant topics as: gossiping, worldly versus heavenly wisdom, the testing of faith through trials, God's condemnation of class distinctions, confession and forgiveness of sins, effective prayer, faith versus works, resisting the devil, and finding the meaning of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The apostle James addressed his readers directly and pointedly, using vivid images from ordinary life and attention-gripping statements. His letter reveals how a genuine faith is a tested faith, and how encountering difficulties is an essential part of the growth to Christian maturity. In this Bible Speaks Today volume, J. Alec Motyer's rich exposition brings James's letter to life for today's readers. Motyer is himself gripped by James's energy and concern for practical Christianity. He draws out the book's memorable themes: the link between enduring trials and maturity; the good gifts of God; faith, works, and Christian concern in a world of human need; the implications of careless and evil words; the church and healing; confession of sin; the need for active purity in life; and more. This revised edition of a classic BST volume includes a new interior design, lightly updated language, and updated Scripture quotations throughout.
