Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, Vol. 83: December 15, 1921 I am in receipt of your letters dated Thanksgiving Day, and appreciate very highly the loving sentiments expressed in them. It was very kind of mother and you to Spend part of the holiday writing to me. I was pleased to hear that you have taken up the Book of Mormon as a home study. I have read it through several times. The more I read it the better I like it. Like it? I love it, yes, with all my heart. I have thanked God many times for preserving it, for bringing it forth in the day in which we live, and for the privilege I have had of reading and pondering over its sacred pages. Do you know what the Prophet Joseph Smith said concerning the Book of Mormon? He said a man would get nearer to God by reading it than he would by reading any other book. The Prophet spoke the truth. No book has ever brought me as near to God as the Book of Mormon has. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: May 12, 1921 At the Tuesday morning session, April 5th, the dark, glowering skies made it necessary to turn on the lights in the tabernacle, while outside it was snowing heavily. Overcoats and winter wraps hung from the balcony railing and were in evidence every where. President Grant commented on the excellent attendance, considering the adverse climatic conditions. Elder Stephen L. Richards, the first speaker, quoted Shakes peare's Sweet are the uses of adversity. Financial conditions have been unnatural and upset and many have been obliged to retrench, said he wondered if this condition has not been brought about to vindicate the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The gospel is interpreted in terms of life and living, and while the Church as such does not hold its economic mission as paramount, it does regard temporal affairs elemental in Spiritual growth. To this extent, the mission of the Church is economic. Among all people their temporal affairs are part and portion of their growth and progress. The influence of the Church in economics has had a stabilizing effect on the affairs of the community. Elder Richards gave it as his conviction that the business activities of the community have been saved from catastrophe, by the fact that the president of the Church stands at the head of some of the largest financial institutions of the region over which its membership extends. For his part, said Elder Richards, he repented of any shadow of criticism that might have entered his heart concerning this policy of the Church. He believes that the policy has been vindicated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: January 27, 1921 This imperfect account of the wonderful vision of those two nights was listened to with rapt attention by the large audience, and was repeated for years after by many who heard it. A pro found sensation was produced by its narration, for it unfolded to many minds details of the glory of the spirit world that they had not realized, from reading the general expressions in which the revelations tell of them. Moulton sought to correct an erroneous impression. Apparently, he is reported to have said, it had been given out that these meetings are an open attack on the 'mormon' people and the Latter-day Saints' Church. This is not true, he said. What we are planning to do is to study the 'mormon' people and their Church, rather than to conduct a campaign against them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: June 30, 1921 You may think me too absolute in my language; but how can I be too positive in that which I know? Were I to say I know you are in this tabernacle, would any language be too absolute? Just as certainly do I know that this work is true and cannot be overthrown by the world; although they may seek to kill, and destroy, and persecute the saints of God to the death, they never will prevail against it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: March 3, 1921 The human family in the exercise of their foolish wisdom have succeeded in reducing the natural life of man from nearly a thousand years to an average of but little more than thirty, growing out of their habits, customs and modes of living. This fact shows the vain progress made by the world, in not learning and applying to man's advantage, the laws of life. The Word of Wisdom must be carefully observed, as well as the laws that relate to the elements, of which no one should plead ignorance, to turn the tide and stream of life, so as to give length of days and multiplicity of years, until the age of a man shall be as the age of a tree, instead of the few clays which are now his portion. The young especially of our day should not be afraid of a free and constant use of cold water both for internal and external applications. It is perhaps the most important of all the ele ments, from the fact that it more readily and intimately associ ates itself with all other elements than others we have named. Earth, air and the heavens above us are full of it, and God has chosen it as the one through which we enter His kingdom, the one that enters largely into many of His sacred ordinances for the salvation of man: to represent the shed blood of our Redeemer in the sacrament; and when the elder would wash his feet against any place or people, pure cold water in summer or winter, will answer the purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: February 3, 1921 And now as the great purposes of God are hastening to their accomplishment, and the things spoken of in the Prophets are fulfilling; as the kingdom of God is established 011 the earth, and the ancient order of things restored, the Lord has manifested to us this duty and privilege. We are commanded to be baptized for our dead, thus fulfilling the words of Obadiah, when speaking of the glory of the latter day: And Saviors shall come upon Mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's. A View of these things reconciles the Scrip tures of truth, justifies the ways of God to man, places the human family upon an equal footing, and harmonizes with every principle of righteousness, justice and truth. We will conclude. With the words of Peter: For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles. For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. - Times and Seasons, April 15th, 1842. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: March 31, 1921 It is not the optic nerve alone that gives the knowledge of sur rounding objects to the mind, but it is that which God has placed in man - a system of intelligence that attracts knowledge, as light cleaves to light, intelligence to intelligence, and truth to truth. It is this which lays in man a proper foundation for all education. We are at present low, weak, and groveling in the dark, but we are planted here in weakness for the purpose of exaltation. It is. At the time of the formation of the tabernacle of flesh, that the education of human life commences. Our traditions lead us to reflect upon death as we formerly did, and to suppose that this life is'only designed to prepare us to meet the last moments of the dissolution of the body. This life is now the only life to us; and if we do not appreciate it properly it is impossible to prepare for a higher and more exalted life. We live to-day to prepare for life to - morrow; and if we are prepared to live, death is divested of its terrors, fer we die only to live in another condition. In fact, if we only appreciate this life we will never die. Our bodies may sleep in the grave for a short time - the earthly particles of this tabernacle will return to their mother earth - but that ever-living power within us will never sleep, and we shall receive our bodies again. Yve are trying to improve ourselves in every particular, for God has given us mental and physical powers to be improved, and these are most precious gifts; more precious are they to us than fine gold. God is our Father, and He wishes His children to become like Him by improving upon the means He has supplied for this purpose. In reality there can be no miracle, only to the ignorant. The glory of man is fleeting as the twilight, and like the 'baseless fabric' of a dream, it vanishes away. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: March 24, 1921 I said to you that I know that the Lord communicates with his servants. I have not doubted this as a fact since I was a boy and heard the testimony of my father, regarding the revelation that came to him of the divinity of the mission of the Prophet Joseph. I feel impressed to relate that circumstance and add his testi mony to the one that I am now giving. He accepted a call to a mission about 1880. When he began preaching, in his native land, and bore testimony of the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ, he noticed that the people turned away from him. They were bitter in their hearts against anything 'mormon, and the name of Joseph Smith seemed to arouse antagonism in their hearts. One day he concluded that the best way to get these people would be to preach just the simple principles, the atone ment of the Lord Jesus Christ, the first principles of the gospel, and not bear testimony of the restoration of the gospel. It first came 'simply, as a passing thought, but yet it influenced his future work. In a month or so he became oppressed with a gloomy, downcast feeling and he could not enter into the spirit of his work. He did not really know what was the matter, but his mind became obstructed, his spirit became clogged, he was oppressed and hampered; and that feeling of depression continued until it weighed him down with such heaviness that he went to the Lord and said: 'unless I can get this feeling removed, I will have to go home. I can not continue my work with this feeling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
