Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All his life, author Doug Hickerson repeated "Thy Kingdom come" in the Lord's Prayer. Yet, God's kingdom seemed irrelevant to him, even as a seminary student and a church layman. Hickerson was a liberal Protestant, active in a mainline denominational church and in community causes. He became curious about spiritual paths to God beyond the Church. While in his midfifties and still active in his church, he started a spiritual journey that included exploring other religions and spirituality. Steeped in the popular "New Age" spirituality of the 1990s, he wrote about the coming new millennium. He felt that humankind was evolving spiritually and was headed for an enlightened utopia, the "Age of Aquarius." His humanistic visions ended abruptly when he met families who belonged to "the yellow barn church" in his village. In their fellowship, it became clear that God-not man-is in control and lovingly rules our destiny. He awakened to the Kingdom of God present now on earth with its fulfillment yet to come. At age sixty-eight, Hickerson's life-changing experience in the evangelical Church and in God's kingdom is deeply personal and grounded in the Bible and solid theology. The warm and at times humorous narrative in The Kingdom of God and the Yellow Barn Church details God's providence and promptings over Hickerson's lifetime.

Book excerpt: In the new order of the Kingdom of God all earthly and man-made institutions cease to exist. Our lives are not governed by external rules, regulations, laws, traditions, systems, organizations, or hierarchies, but wholly by the guidance of the Holy Spirit of Truth. Our citizenship is in heaven, therefore the rule of our realm is SPIRIT. The Kingdom is not a physical, organizational, or political structure, but always the doing of God's will. Sonship to God is a relationship. Sonship is strictly a spiritual relationship and is entered into by the reception from the Father of the Spirit of sonship. Only then can one cry, "Abba, Father," out of a union of Spirit with the Father. Because we are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts; and as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. So this Third book in our series covers the Principals, Keys and Righteousness of the Kingdom as well as the, Peace, Joy and Power of the Kingdom.

Book excerpt: “This is a book about Heaven,” says Jayber Crow, “but I must say too that . . . I have wondered sometimes if it would not finally turn out to be a book about Hell.” It is 1932 and he has returned to his native Port William to become the town's barber. Orphaned at age ten, Jayber Crow’s acquaintance with loneliness and want have made him a patient observer of the human animal, in both its goodness and frailty. He began his search as a “pre–ministerial student” at Pigeonville College. There, freedom met with new burdens and a young man needed more than a mirror to find himself. But the beginning of that finding was a short conversation with “Old Grit,” his profound professor of New Testament Greek. “You have been given questions to which you cannot be given answers. You will have to live them out—perhaps a little at a time.” “And how long is that going to take?” “I don't know. As long as you live, perhaps.” “That could be a long time.” “I will tell you a further mystery,” he said. “It may take longer.” Wendell Berry’s clear–sighted depiction of humanity’s gifts—love and loss, joy and despair—is seen though his intimate knowledge of the Port William Membership.
