Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, Vol. 5: October, 1919-September, 1920 In this tracing a pithed dog Of kilos weight was arranged for the recording Of uterine contractions (uterus in situ), blood pressure (mercury manometer, right carotid artery), and bronchiole contractions. The method used in recording the latter has been fully described previously and need not be discussed here further than to briefly indicate that a special instrument (lung plethysmograph) was inserted air-tight into the sectioned anterior wall Of the Chest. This instrument held the chest wall rigidly expanded and a special artificial respiration machine was used to aspirate air from the chest intermittently. This partial exhaustion of the chest cavity caused air to rush into the lungs through the trachea and expand the lungs. The drum tracing was made by means of a tambour connected to the side tube Of the tracheal cannula. The record thus Obtained shows by its amplitude the amount of air passing into and out Of the lungs at each inspiration and expiration. Contraction of the bronchioles reduces this amount of (tidal) air and simultaneously reduces the amplitude of the lung tracing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, Vol. 4: October 1918-September 1919 Rabbit. - oil Quarter Harm - The changes observed are of slight de gree, consisting of contraction and pyknosis of the corneal epithelium which is more marked at the vertex and less marked over the limbus. Likewise the cells of the substantia propria show a slightly greater degree of pyknosis and contraction than in control preparations. The bulbar and palpebral conjunc tivae show a similar pyknosis and contraction. In the fornix there is a more decided vacuolation of the conjunctival epithelium. The epithelium of the cutaneous surface of the eyelid shows also slight pyknosis and contraction. In the region of the inferior fornix alone does the subconjunctival connective tis sue show a well - marked edema. In the upper fornix the edema is less marked. The lacrimal gland shows a marked distention of its gland spaces which are filled with secretion. Harder's gland and the tarsal glands show no changes. Likewise the sinus hairs. The blood vessels of all parts are anemic rather than congested. There is no hemorrhage and no thrombosis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, Vol. 2: October, 1916-September, 1917 The clinical findings in regard to uric acid in human blood are of consider able interest. The field of work here is new and we must be cautious in draw ing conclusions. The recent researches of Folin and his pupils in Boston and of Myers and Fine at the post-graduate School in New York have Shown that normal human blood contains from one to three milligrams of uric acid in 100 grams of blood. In lead poisoning, in gout, and in nephritis, the uric acid con tent of the blood is usually markedly increased and the determination of uric acid in the blood of suspected gout is of unquestioned value. In connection with gout the recent research-es have shown that the old idea that in this condition the blood becomes saturated with uric acid must be abandoned. The solubility of uric acid in blood serum has been Shown to be much greater than the concentration of uric acid occurring in the blood of gout. Furthermore, in nephritis the uric acid content of the blood may be quite as high as in gout for long periods of time without any symptom of uric acid deposition occurring. We have therefore to assume that in gout there is not only' a kidney deficiency for uric acid elimination but that there is also a direct vicarious ex cretion of uric acid from the blood stream into certain tissues where it finally reaches the saturation point and deposits in the form of sodium acid urate. The view of Minkowski and others that the uric acid circulates in gout in some dif ferent form from that in the normal, finds some support from the results al ready referred to with the blood of lower mammals. It is my opinion that this view will prove to be the correct one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
