Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1910, Vol. 8 The species on which my work was done was Stylotella helio phila Wilson, a monaxonid demosponge belonging to the order Helichondrina. This species will be described in a monograph on the Sponges of Beaufort, N. C., soon to be published by Dr. H. V. Wilson, and I am indebted to Dr. Wilson for having called my attention to this sponge, which in all respects was extremely satisfactory for the work I had planned. My investigations were carried out in June and July at the Beaufort Laboratory of the United States Bureau of Fisheries, and I am under obligations to Commissioner G. M. Bowers for the privilege of working at this laboratory and to its director, Mr. H. D. Aller, for generous pro vision during my stay there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1912, Vol. 12 But differences in the size of cells may be due, not to unequal cell division, but to unequal rates of division, or to unequal growth of cells subsequent to division. In some instances cells divide rarely and consequently become large, while adjoining cells divide frequently and therefore remain small. The fact that cells are not always of the same size at the time of division is one of capital importance for it shows conclusively that the factors which bring about cell division may be separated from those which cause growth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1918, Vol. 24 No attempt to review or abstract from the literature the facts relating to dedifferentiation in metazoa will be made. This has been done in an excellent summary and review by Schultz Schultz formulated the observations on metazoa in terms of the hypothesis that all phenomena of form regulation are somehow related to and a result of the reversal of differentiation or de differentiation. In other words regeneration is a result of the differentiation of dedifferentiated cells (see also Child. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Vol. 1: The Journal of Experimental Zoology, Baltimore The egg of Dentalium, like that of Cerebratulus, possesses certain features by means of which the axis may be determined in the living egg from the moment of its release from the ovary. The egg is more or less deeply pigmented, perfectly opaque, and of a color that varies in diflerent individuals from light olivaceous to reddish brown or almost brick red. When first set free the egg is somewhat irregular, but quickly becomes more rounded. It is then seen to be very considerably flattened, so as often to be almost biscuit-shaped, one side being always more flattened than the other, and often more or less irregular in contour. Viewed by reflected light the central region of each of the flat tened sides is seen to be occupied by a very distinct, though vaguely bounded, white area, nearly or quite free from pigment (fig. 1) these areas, as shown by the subsequent development, correspond with the two poles of the egg, and the more flattened side, which. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1944, Vol. 26 The rapid development of the new science of genetics has opened up many fertile fields Of investigation and it has also re vived interest in the problem Of inbreeding Which has been dor mant for many years. Charles Darwin '7 8) considered the subject Of inbreeding so important that not only did he collect all available data regarding it, but he himself carried on a series of inbreeding experiments that extended over a period of eleven years. Darwin's experiments on plants were followed by those of Crampe of Huth and of Retzima - Bos '94) on various species of mammals. The conclusions reached by each Of these investigators can well be stated in the words Of Darwin The consequences of close interbreeding carried on for too long a time, are, as is generally believed, loss Of size, con stitutional vigor and fertility, sometimes accompanied by a tendency to malformation. Darwin adds, furthermore: That any evil directly follows from the closest interbreeding has been denied by many persons, but rarely by any practical breeder and never, as far as I know, by one who has largely bred ani mals which propagate their kind quickly.
