Book excerpt: Love, Honour, and Jealousy investigates the impact of the Italian economic miracle of the 1950s and 1960s on intimate life. Just as Italy was rapidly forged into an urban, industrial nation in these years, the ways in which Italians thought about family, love, and marriage were transformed bymigration and modern consumer culture. At the core of this book lies the investigation of almost one hundred and fifty unpublished diaries and memoirs written by ordinary men and women who were coming of age during these years. These personal testimonies reveal unique insights into the experiences, thoughts, and feelings of those who came of age against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Italy. The personal stories are explored alongside the films, magazines, and music of the time, which were saturated with both new and old ideas of romance. Films and magazines encouraged young Italians to putromantic love and individual desire over family, contributing to changing expectations about marriage, and often resulting in family tensions. At the same time popular love stories were frequently laced with jealousy, hinting at the darker emotions that were linked in many minds, to love. Thisdarker side was a significant part of the story of changing ideas about intimacy in post-war Italy, as was the growing desire to marry for love. Control and violence against women was closely linked to southern ideas about family honour but also to anxieties about Italy's changing society, whichmanifested itself in romantic jealousy. Through its exploration of courtship, marriage, honour crime, forced marriage, jealousy, and marriage breakdown, Love, Honour, and Jealousy traces the ways in which the lives both of individuals and of the nation itself, were shaped by changing understandingsof romantic love and its darker companions, honour and jealousy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Years of Alienation in Italy offers an interdisciplinary overview of the socio-political, psychological, philosophical, and cultural meanings that the notion of alienation took on in Italy between the 1960s and the 1970s. It addresses alienation as a social condition of estrangement caused by the capitalist system, a pathological state of the mind and an ontological condition of subjectivity. Contributors to the edited volume explore the pervasive influence this multifarious concept had on literature, cinema, architecture, and photography in Italy. The collection also theoretically reassesses the notion of alienation from a novel perspective, employing Italy as a paradigmatic case study in its pioneering role in the revolution of mental health care and factory work during these two decades.

Book excerpt: The extent of the economic impact of the Second World War in Italy was staggering. The global damage can be calculated in 3,200 billion lire (sum equal to three times the income of 1938). There was a serious damage to agricultural production, especially in central Italy. The war damages severely affected railways, ports, fleet, roads. According to the calculations of the Bank of Italy, the war damage suffered by the industrial sector, on the whole represented 8% of the value of the plants, while The Economist reported that 62% of the railway network was unscathed and thus 50% of the material rolling stock. This was, perhaps, a positive news as under these conditions, the mechanical industry was able to quickly recover the numbers of the pre-war situation. There were great difficulties for industrial reconversion to the production of peace and for the supply of raw materials. There were disastrous conditions in some major Italian cities destroyed by bombing. The production of wheat was somewhat spared, as in 1945 it was 75% of that before the war. Instead, sugar and meat dropped to 10% and 25% of the pre-war period. But the war had also caused major moral disasters with the armed struggle against the Nazis and Fascists which in some cases had turned from a patriotic war of liberation into a real civil war with its aftermath of hatreds and private vendettas. Public order was severely compromised by gang crime organised in many regions and by the Sicilian separatist movement, due to its mafia complicities, although "of course, separatism was not all mafia nor were all mafia members separatists. Many followers of the movement did not they had nothing to do with the mafia ... ".The recovery was however rapid: in September 1946, industrial activity was 70% of that of 1938. In the following pages, we shall focus our attention on the review the industrial and economical history of the Frusinate, which will help us to better understand the Italian post-war and even the current situation.

Book excerpt: This Oxford Handbook provides a fresh overall view and interpretation of the modern economic growth of one of the largest European countries, whose economic history is less known internationally than that of other comparably large and successful economies. It will provide, for the first time, a comprehensive, quantitative "new economic history" of Italy. The handbook offers an interpretation of the main successes and failures of the Italian economy at a macro level, the research--conducted by a large international team of scholars --contains entirely new quantitative results and interpretations, spanning the entire 150-year period since the unification of Italy, on a large number of issues. By providing a comprehensive view of the successes and failures of Italian firms, workers, and policy makers in responding to the challenges of the international business cycle, the book crucially shapes relevant questions on the reasons for the current unsatisfactory response of the Italian economy to the ongoing "second globalization." Most chapters of the handbook are co-authored by both an Italian and a foreign scholar.
