Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial Revolution The classes that labour with their hands for weekly wages have now entrusted to them much of the power possessed by the Government of this country. The future of this country, and the parts of the world dependent on it must be largely settled by the use, wise or foolish, good or evil, they will be making of this power. Their own future depends on it. If they refuse to think, if they choose to listen to fools' advice, if they do not take advantage of the opportunities they have for making themselves better, morally, physically, and intellectually, the world will pass them by speedily and inevitably. Goodwill is no excuse in face of facts only good deeds will count. Knowledge and the will to use it, and the courage and perseverance required to use it rightly, these are the necessities of progress and of well-being of any kind. Ignorance that may be felt (but that may by honest effort be destroyed) is the cause of many more of our troubles than we like to admit. Science, not Creed, is the Deliverer, if we will only take the trouble to follow it. There will be plenty of mistakes on the way, but if a man means to learn by his former mistakes, he nearly always has the chance, and the advance, though slow, will be continuous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Imperial Germany and the Industrial Revolution There is of course no intention here to impart in formation on the history of this period, whether political or economic; and the historical information made use of as material for argument is of the com monplace kind familiar by common notoriety or from the standard manuals accessible to all readers. Any thing like a comprehensive citation of sources and authorities has accordingly been dispensed with, though citations and references covering given points have been brought in where special occasion appeared to call for it. The argument runs between the lines of the histories, as conventionally written, and does not lean on recondite material or niceties of detail. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the Industrial Revolution as experienced in Great Britain (and, within that sphere, mainly on the early development of the engineering and chemical industries), the authors develop the thesis that the interaction between theorists and men of practical affairs was much closer, more complex and more consequential than some historians of science have held it to be. Deeply researched, gracefully argued and fully documented. First published in 1969, and established now as a "classic" in the field, the present edition has a new foreword by Margaret C. Jacob. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel in the Industrial Revolution This contribution to the history of the English Iron Industry is the product of the leisure, not of an historian, but of one engaged in teaching economic theory. The materials on which it is based were collected when I was on the staff first of the University of Sheffield, then of the University of Birmingham; but most of the actual writing has been done in Manchester. A generation ago writers on modern economic history found their principal quarry in blue-books, Parliamentary Journals, and other Government records. Hence arose not only an over-estimate of the part played by the State in economic development, but also, perhaps, an unduly gloomy View of former industrial society; for it -is the Pathology, rather than the Physiology, of social life that forms the subject of commissions of enquiry, of Home Office reports, and of parliamentary debates. Within the last few years a small group of scholars has attempted to re-write the economic history of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, using as a basis the surviving records of business undertakings. The University of Manchester already possesses the complete documents of four such concerns, and it is hoped that proprietors of long-established businesses will add to the collection. By so doing they will help to a truer View of the past, and therefore to a clearer understanding of the present. They need have no misgivings Concerning publicity. Houses that have stood the test of a century were not built, shamefully, on sand their foundations will bear scrutiny. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in Modern Industry The main plan of the book is to give a sketch or outline of the position of working women, with special reference to the effects of the industrial revolution on her employment, taking industrial revolution in its broader sense, not as an event of the late eighteenth century, but as a continuous process still actively at work. I have aimed at description rather than theor'y. Some of the current theories about women's position are of great interest, and I make no pretence to an atti tude of detachment in regard to them, but it certainly appears to me that we need more facts and knowledge before theory can be based on a sure foundation. Here and there I have drawn my own conclusions from what I saw and heard, but these conclusions are mostly provisional, and may well be modified in the light of clearer knowledge.
