Book excerpt: The roles of men and women in the ancient society were well defined. And even though the institution of marriage has remained the same since aeons, a woman’s purpose and status has drastically changed over the years. Women, since the beginning of time, were always taught that their purpose was to serve men. But now, the idea that women are created for themselves and for their own happiness is beginning to conquer the world. Women, today, are educated, independent, and not at all at the mercy of men. From living their lives as an oppressed gender, women now have an equal role in society. But despite her liberation, women continue to be enchained by the conditionings of the patriarchal mindset. The Householder explores the psychology which is responsible for the biases and prejudices that surround a woman’s identity and sexuality and takes us through her journey of survival in a unanimously skewed world.

Book excerpt: India's first biography of Shashi Kapoor sheds light on one of the country's most enigmatic personalities-an actor who straddles the worlds of commercial Hindi cinema, theatre and small-budget art movies; who is, at once, an earnest householder and a committed star. In this rare book, we are offered glimpses of Shashi Kapoor, the family man-son of Prithviraj Kapoor, husband of Jennifer Kendal, and father to Kunal, Karan and Sanjna. We are led through Shashi Kapoor's film career-his debut as a bright-eyed child-actor in Awara; his emergence, in the hectic 1970s, as India's busiest performer-with a slew of hits including Deewaar and Trishul; and his rise to international prominence with Merchant-Ivory's The Householder and a 'trilogy' of films on older men with fading pasts. Equally, we are provided with an astute analysis of Shashi Kapoor, the businessman-the proprietor of Film-Valas; the producer of Shyam Benegal films; and the distributor of Bobby. With luminous and thus-far undisclosed stories by the actor's family (Neetu Singh, Rishi, Sanjna and Kunal Kapoor), co-stars (Shabana Azmi, Simi Garewal, Sharmila Tagore), colleagues (Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani, James Ivory, Hanif Kureishi, Aparna Sen), and friends; a compelling foreword by Karan Johar; and stunning photographs from Merchant-Ivory's archives, Shashi Kapoor, the biography-by one of India's best-known film journalists-is as captivating as Shashi Kapoor, the star.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays, “go local,” “organic food,” and “sustainability” are on the tip of everyone's tongue. Harriet Fasenfest's A Householder's Guide to the Universe takes up the banner of progressive homemaking and urban farming as a way to confront the political, social, and environmental issues facing the world. While offering plenty of useful advice on how to do common household chores sustainably, Fasenfest goes deeper to discuss the philosophy of "householding." The book is organized in monthly installments according to season, and the author invites readers into her own home, garden, and kitchen to consider concrete tools for change. Streetwise and poetic, fierce and romantic, the book is more than just a blueprint for escaping the current economic and environmental logjam — it’s also a readable and pithy analysis of how we got there.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For scholars of ancient Indian religions, the wandering mendicants who left home and family for a celibate life and the search for liberation represent an enigma. The Vedic religion, centered on the married household, had no place for such a figure. Much has been written about the Indian ascetic but hardly any scholarly attention has been paid to the married householder with wife and children, generally referred to in Sanskrit as grhastha: "the stay-at-home." The institution of the householder is viewed implicitly as posing little historical problems with regard to its origin or meaning. This volume problematizes the figure of the householder within ancient Indian culture and religion. It shows that the term grhastha is a neologism and is understandable only in its opposition to the ascetic who goes away from home (pravrajita). Through a thorough and comprehensive analysis of a wide range of inscriptions and texts, ranging from the Vedas, Dharmasastras, Epics, and belle lettres to Buddhist and Jain texts and texts on governance and erotics, this volume analyses the meanings, functions, and roles of the householder from the earliest times unti about the fifth century CE. The central finding of these studies is that the householder bearing the name grhastha is not simply a married man with a family but someone dedicated to the same or similar goals as an ascetic while remaining at home and performing the economic and ritual duties incumbent on him. The grhastha is thus not a generic householder, for whom there are many other Sanskrit terms, but a religiously charged concept that is intended as a full-fledged and even superior alternative to the concept of a religious renouncer.
