Book excerpt: In The Horse Fair, Robin Becker asks questions about citizenship and participation in the marketplaces—of bodies, of ideas, of objects—in which we function. She investigates how individuals marginalized by gender, religion, and sexual preference negotiate public and private spheres while inventing sustainable communities. Beginning with the great nineteenth-century French painter Rosa Bonheur, Becker has produced a number of multi-voiced, synthetic portraits, each within a framework of social history and a poetics of partiality—she speaks from the persona of Charlotte Salomon, child of assimilate, German-Jewish parents and grandparents and killed by the Nazis at the age of twenty-six; she appropriates passages from the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services; and juxtaposes them against stanzas that mourn her sister's death and those that celebrate non-traditional families. Organized around the long meditations, other poems show Becker's dexterity with formal verse (sestina, sonnet, tercets) and her imaginative engagements with free verse. The Horse Fair takes its name from Bonheur's monumental painting and serves as the vehicle through which Becker explores anti-Semitism, cross-dressing, and Bonheur's lifelong relationships with women. In Becker's hands, The Horse Fair transports us to the communal plaza where we come to barter and to buy, to study one another, to touch the foundation upon which we build our temporary habitations.

Book excerpt: A wildly entertaining and surprisingly educational dive into art history as you've never seen it before, from the host of the beloved ArtCurious podcast We're all familiar with the works of Claude Monet, thanks in no small part to the ubiquitous reproductions of his water lilies on umbrellas, handbags, scarves, and dorm-room posters. But did you also know that Monet and his cohort were trailblazing rebels whose works were originally deemed unbelievably ugly and vulgar? And while you probably know the tale of Vincent van Gogh's suicide, you may not be aware that there's pretty compelling evidence that the artist didn't die by his own hand but was accidentally killed--or even murdered. Or how about the fact that one of Andy Warhol's most enduring legacies involves Caroline Kennedy's moldy birthday cake and a collection of toenail clippings? ArtCurious is a colorful look at the world of art history, revealing some of the strangest, funniest, and most fascinating stories behind the world's great artists and masterpieces. Through these and other incredible, weird, and wonderful tales, ArtCurious presents an engaging look at why art history is, and continues to be, a riveting and relevant world to explore.

Book excerpt: An inspiring picture book about Rosa Bonheur, the most famous and best-selling painter of her century In a stunning ode to underrepresented women everywhere, award-winning illustrator Ruth Sanderson tells the untold story of French artist Rosa Bonheur in this picture book biography. Rosa Bonheur was born in 1822 in France at a time when young women had limited options beyond being a wife and mother. But Rosa wouldn’t stand for this. She wore pants, rode horses astride, and often broke society’s rules. She wanted to be a famous painter just like her father. Female artists at the time were encouraged to paint domestic scenes of children and family, but Rosa was determined to capture the unbridled wild beauty of horses. Her masterpiece The Horse Fair was eight feet high and sixteen feet wide. Rosa went on to become the most celebrated artist of her time with paintings purchased by art collectors, museums, and galleries around the world. With the decline in popularity of realistic painting, Rosa’s trailblazing story was almost forgotten. Revel at the bravery and fortitude of young Rosa as you take in Ruth Sanderson’s immaculate rendition of her life and artistry.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horse Fair Gee up, old fellow! Now go on!" These words were spoken by a barefooted boy plowing corn in a lonely field; and they were addressed to the old farm-horse which he was driving. He was nearing the end of the last row that was to be plowed that day. "Gee up, Kiron! Go on a little farther. Oh, who ever saw so hot a day in June!" cried the lad, wiping his face with his sleeve. "Whoa, haw! Now, turn in under the shade of the maple, and we '11 rest a bit before we go home. Whoa!" Loosing the horse from the plow, and then leaving him to take care of himself, the boy threw himself face downward among the grass and blossoming clover that grew in the shade of the tree. It was only five o'clock in the afternoon, and he would not be expected at the farmhouse until six. He would have an hour to himself, to rest and read. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each June, the gypsy, Romany and travelling community converges on the sleepy Cumbrian town of Appleby where for a few days the horse is king. This traditional horse fair is probably the oldest in Europe and certainly the largest. Here the river Eden flows through an area known as The Sands where onlookers gather to see riders wash and prepare their equines as they have done for centuries. Along the 'flashing lane' crowds assess the potential of horses for sale, from traditional cobs to Shetland ponies. Here horses are paraded at speed to attract potential buyers. There is also an abundance of horse-drawn vehicles, the most recognisable of which are the bow-top caravans, highly decorated in the traditional style. Up on Fair Hill stalls sell all manner of tack, saddlery and decorated crockery. This is a spectacle that attracts thousands of spectators. Heidi Sands' photographs evoke the glamour and vitality of the fair, the beauty of the horses and the distinctive characteristics of the people who own and 'flash' them.

Book excerpt: WINNER OF THE FRANCO-BRITISH SOCIETY LITERARY AWARD 2020 'Art is a Tyrant recounts [Bonheur's] life with no little brio.' Michael Prodger, The Times Books of the Year 2020 'A diligently researched, beautifully produced and insistently sympathetic biography.' Kathryn Hughes, Guardian A new biography of the wildly unconventional 19th-century animal painter and gender equality pioneer Rosa Bonheur, from the author of the acclaimed Mistress of Paris and Renoir's Dancer. Rosa Bonheur was the very antithesis of the feminine ideal of 19th-century society. She was educated, she shunned traditional 'womanly' pursuits, she rejected marriage - and she wore trousers. But the society whose rules she spurned accepted her as one of their own, because of her genius for painting animals. She shared an intimate relationship with the eccentric, self-styled inventor Nathalie Micas, who nurtured the artist like a wife. Together Rosa, Nathalie and Nathalie's mother bought a chateau and with Rosa's menagerie of animals the trio became one of the most extraordinary households of the day. Catherine Hewitt's compelling new biography is an inspiring evocation of a life lived against the rules.
