Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Apothecary, Ancient and Modern, of the City of London The peculiar position in which the Society of Apothecaries of the City of London has been placed by threatened legislation, and by the new regulations of the Medical Council, induces me to offer to the public and my professional brethren the following brief history of our Society, from the time of its foundation to the present period and I trust I shall be able to convince my readers of the great benefit which the Society had rendered during its lengthened existence to science, the advantages it has conferred on the world at large, and the ability it still displays to carry on its functions for the good of mankind, whilst it upholds its own reputation, and the honor of the Medical Profession. My thanks are especially due to my friend Dr. Furley, for copious, new, and interesting matter with which that gentleman has kindly furnished me, and for which I desire to make my public acknowledgments.
