The aim has been to give a brief history of the most important events connected with the set tlement and development of the country through Territorial days more than twenty-seven years - and at the same time not to have the book so voluminous as to be cumbersome to either old people or children; and also to give a brief review of the progress made by the people of Idaho since statehood up to 1909, with a brief view of the outlook for the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Custer County, Idaho The location of this point lies in a hole on the top of the most southern of the three small buttes, about one mile south of the Challis cemetery, and one-quarter mile west of the main highway. The date, according to some old Indians, was about 1845. This conflicts with the engraving on one of the guns, C. S. A. Whether this inscription represents the year of the tragedy or not we have no way of ascertaining. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Idaho Chronology, Nomenclature, Bibliography Three elements are necessary for the establishment of an historical fact, namely, time, place and incident. The absence of either element may make romance or fiction, but not history. The first section is a chronological table of important events in the history of Idaho, and while the data, in some instances, is approximate rather than absolute, it is published merely as a beginning, which in time should be corrected until the events in Idaho's history are chronicled as historically accurate. The second section, that of nomenclature, is published for the purpose of awakening an interest in geographical lore and historical antiquity to the end that efforts will be made by others to preserve and perpetuate the origin and reason for our State names. The third section is a bibliography of Idaho history such as has been used in the compilation of this work, and credit is given to such writers furnishing the chief thought for each heading, which acknowledgment immediately follows the article. It is expected that this book will aid teachers in their work, help students in their research and become a handy reference for the general reader. If such results are achieved, then the purpose for which this effort was made will have been attained by the author. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Co-Opolitan: A Story of the Co-Operative Commonwealth of Idaho This volume is given to the public without other excuse than the simple fact that it has been written. If it is read it may do some good, but in any event it cannot do injury. If it is not read the hour which knew it will pass with it, and countless hours, like waves in Time's ocean, will roll on multitudinously, with their burdens of good and evil, and pass also. Because the writer believed he had a thought to express, which, if heeded, would help, in some slight degree, to right human wrongs, he ventured to offer it in this form. He had discovered by experience that no radical and permanent reform can be successfully effected without the consent of what are called "the substantial business interests" of the established system. He has also observed that the system now in operation is constantly undergoing changes, and that our predecessors in its control, of a quarter of a century ago, would scarcely recognize the system by which we live to-day. These changes have been accomplished through evolution only. Numbers count for nothing. Millions submit readily to the will of one. Education counts for everything, and if we had been taught that to stand on our heads an hour a day was essential to salvation most of us would observe that form without question. Some, however, are superior to error and are strong enough to be and to do right. But these arc scattered. Moore of Idaho The world is not ready, even yet, to admit the right of private judgment, either in matters sec ular or sectarian, but sooner or later that dream of the ages will be realized. And civilization will be given a mighty impetus when men are granted by their fellows the right to freedom of opinion. The opposite attitude has cost the lives of millions in the past and it is the barrier to the highest development of millions today. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical, Descriptive and Commercial Directory of Owyhee County, Idaho: January 1898 The state of Idaho is a portion of that vast territory lying west of the Mississippi river which was acquired by purchase from France, during the administration of President Jefferson, in 1803. In the spring of 1804 an expedition in charge of Captains Meriwether Lewis and William Clark was organized under the auspices of the United States government, for the purpose of exploring the newly-acquired territory. The expedition started in May, 1804, and wintered on the Missouri river in what is now Montana. On September 11, 1805, they crossed the Bitter Root mountains, and nine days later reached a settlement of the Nez Perce Indians, on Clearwater river. After many days of severe privations and hardships they succeeded in reaching the mouth of the Columbia river on November 14, 1805, where they wintered, and left the following spring for St. Louis, which they reached in safety September, 1806. It is an undisputed fact that the first white man who trod the soil of Idaho was Captain William Clark. The territory being at that time only considered valuable for furs, several fur companies were organized, the first on the field being the Missouri Fur Company, who built Fort Henry, at the headwaters of the Snake river, but shortly afterwards abandoned it.
