Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Taming of the Sioux No historian of prominence should presume to ask the public to take his work as the last word on the subject which it treats. There is bound to be some one who will find inaccuracies and deficiencies, and the whole work may be condemned on account of them. There never was a history written that is absolutely correct, so I suppose mine must be a little off on a few trivial matters. A deep student of the ethnology, phonology, psychology and anthropology of the Sioux may (I say may advisedly) find these defects. To him I offer no apologies, he has enough ologies now, and I don't wish to burden him with more of them. History is essentially didactical, indeed it is, and we soon tire of its prosiness, its unpicturesque display of data and long-winded statistics. However, there are some individuals who are ultra-pedantic, and to whom nothing appeals but what is strictly utilitarian. To such persons I commend certain parts of this work, while to the others - the great majority - the balance of it may prove entertaining. The absence of humor I greatly deplore, for it just seems that I cannot think up anythin' funny. But the reader may find a great deal to laugh about after all, if he is inclined to be critical. The old timers, God bless 'em, always take an important part in an historical work. But they seldom agree with each other. There is a psychological reason for this, as there is for most anything we do not clearly understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Old Applehead Furrman, jogging home across the mesa from Albuquerque, sniffed the soft breeze that came from opal-tinted distances and felt poignantly that spring was indeed here. The grass, thick and green in the sheltered places, was fast painting all the higher ridges and foot-hill slopes, and with the green grass came the lank-bodied, big-kneed calves; which meant that roundup time was at hand. Applehead did not own more than a thousand head of cattle, counting every hoof that walked under his brand. And with the incipient lethargy of old age creeping into his habits of life, roundup time was not with him the important season it once had been; for several years he had been content to hire a couple of men to represent him in the roundups of the larger outfits-men whom he could trust to watch fairly well his interests. By that method he avoided much trouble and hurry and hard work-and escaped also the cares which come with wealth. But this spring was not as other springs had been. Something-whether an awakened ambition or an access of sentiment regarding range matters, he did not know-was stirring the blood in Applehead's veins. Never, since the days when he had been a cowpuncher, had the wide spaces called to him so alluringly; never had his mind dwelt so insistently upon the approach of spring roundup. Perhaps it was because he heard so much range talk at the ranch, where the boys of the Flying U were foregathered in uneasy idleness, their fingers itching for the feel of lariat ropes and branding irons while they gazed out over the wide spaces of the mesa.So much good rangeland unharnessed by wire fencing the Flying U boys had not seen for many a day. During the winter they had been content to ride over it merely for the purpose of helping to make a motion picture of the range, but with the coming of green grass, and with the reaction that followed the completion of the picture that in the making had filled all their thoughts, they were not so content. To the inevitable reaction had been added a nerve racking period of idleness and uncertainty while Luck Lindsay, their director, strove with the Great Western Film Company in Los Angeles for terms and prices that would make for the prosperity of himself and his company.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tonda: A Story of the Sioux While the author wishes to have Tonda classed as fiction, many of the incidents related actually occurred. Generally, the customs are true to life, although some ethnological liberties have been taken. The Indian form of speech is frequently changed, yet many sentences are given as literal translations - from governmental and other reports, from the author's records made while at Pine Ridge reservation, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanneta, the Sioux The Indians set out, as we have said, on their ponies for the agency buildings, five miles distant from their village. They did not in this short ride Observe any Order of movement, such as they would carry into effect if going to battle. Each man took care of himself, and in the race for their meal and beef the chief was no better than the common warrior. The agency buildings in the year 1875 consisted of a small, two-story frame house where the agent lived, three small houses where the assistants lived, a long, low building wherein was the store and the distributing office, a large warehouse where were kept the bulk of the stores, and a little log fort which could be used in case of attack by the Sioux. There was a large enclosure of some four or five acres close at hand, known as the corral. In this enclosure was driven, the morning of ration-day, enough cattle to supply the entire tribe. The government, which fur nished all this, had contracts with large firms south of the Black Hills for the supply of these cattle. They were brought by train within about a hundred miles of the agency and then driven overland. All the supplies had to be brought overland this hundred miles also. When the horde of Indian horsemen came in sight of the agency buildings they scattered out over an extent of several acres, and approached in their usual manner with loud ki-yis and much Haunting of blankets, feathers, and streamers. It was a very clear day, and the sight presented by these Sioux - who, by the way. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
